Featured: Minnesota Voyageur (Carlton, MN)
The 44th annual Minnesota Voyageur 50-Mile Trail Ultramarathon begins and ends at Carlton High School in Carlton, Minnesota. Founded in 1982 by the Northern Minnesota Track Club (NMTC), whose mission is “to provide trail-running events in which we can all participate in and have fun,” the race is a true Midwest classic and one of the oldest ultras run in the United States. The race follows a rugged out-and-back course to Duluth, MN on which participants will have to navigate technical single-track trails (the most difficult in the first and last miles), steep powerline climbs with little shade, creek crossings, 5,000 feet of ascent and descent, and the likelihood of extremely hot and humid weather conditions. Runners have 14 hours to complete the course. Read more.

The 50k runners will attempt to tackle over 5,500 feet of total elevation gain spread over a 7.9-mile technical and rocky loop that they’ll have to complete four times in under 9.5 hours. To aid them on their journey, they’ll have support from eight aid stations, encouraging volunteers and the lure of delicious finish line pizza. Read more.

Featured: The Squatchy Surprise (Millburn, NJ)
The Squatchy Surprise “Trail Party” is a fun and unique fixed-timed event ultra at South Mountain Reservation in Millburn, New Jersey. Inspired by the old TommyKnocker Ultra, the event combines running speed and endurance, race strategy and a little bit of luck. During the race, participants will reach into a bucket of golf balls and pull out a colored ball that matches the color of one of the four different trail loops (ranging from 1-5 miles in length). They’ll have 6 or 12 hours, depending on which ultra distance event they sign up for, to run as many colored loops as they can before 6 p.m. After 6 p.m., they can continue drawing golf balls or wait until 6:30 p.m. to run a half-mile loop to try and rack up mileage before the 7 p.m. cutoff. Squatchy Surprise helps benefit the Bigger Than the Trail foundation, which uses trail running as a way using trail running to advocate for mental health. Read more.
