In this week’s What’s Up in Ultra, we highlight races in Utah, Wisconsin, Texas, Maryland and Urique, Mexico. Featured: Moab’s Red Hot Ultra (Moab, UT)
The 20th anniversary of Moab’s Red Hot Ultra takes place this weekend northwest of Moab, Utah. The third event in the Triple Crown of Moab race series features 50-mile and 55k ultramarathon distances that showcase Utah’s majestic landscape, including views of the La Sal Mountains, Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park. The 50-mile runners will tackle a modified out-and-back course over jeep roads and single track with just over 7,000 feet of elevation gain and loss. The ARKTOS 6 / 12 / 20 Hour Ultra Run kicks off Saturday, February 28, at 11:59 a.m., starting with a traditional belly-warming shot of Fireball (my kind of race) before sending runners out into the Wisconsin winter to complete as many laps as possible in the Southern Kettle Moraine Forest. Participants can choose any of the three looped courses during their fixed-time race: a 2.3-mile short course (167 feet of elevation gain), a 4.1-mile mid course (331 feet of gain) or a 4.9-mile long course (371 feet of ascent). Additional perks include great swag, warming shelters, custom finisher medals and a free post-race meal for all runners. Check out the official ARKTOS race website.

Featured: Cowtown Ultra (Fort Worth, TX)
The Cowtown Ultra returns to Fort Worth, Texas, this weekend as part of one of north Texas’s largest running events. The 50k race, along with the marathon, half marathon, 10k and 5k, showcases Texas’s rich culture and local character, taking runners through historic areas, including the Stockyards. The 50k participants will follow the marathon course with an additional out-and-back section along the riverfront park. Runners have 7.5 hours to complete the race. Featured: Hashawha Hills (Westminster, MD)
Established in 2008, the Hashawha Hills 50K Trail Run takes place on the trails surrounding the Hashawha Environmental Center in Westminster, Maryland. The course is a twisting loop featuring 26 miles of trail, 3 miles of gravel and 2 miles of asphalt, with plenty of rolling hills totaling more than 5,800 feet of elevation gain and loss. Along the way, participants have access to five fully stocked aid stations and support from a tremendous crew of local volunteers. The race begins at 7:30 a.m. and has a 9-hour time limit. Featured: Ultra Maratón Caballo Blanco (Urique, Chihuahua)
The Ultra Maratón Caballo Blanco, also known as the Copper Canyon Ultramarathon, and made famous in Chris McDougall’s book Born to Run, takes place this weekend in Urique, Chihuahua, Mexico. The event was founded in 2003 by American ultrarunner Micah True, nicknamed “El Caballo Blanco,” to honor and support the local Rarámuri (Tarahumara) people. Today, the race draws more than 1,200 runners annually from around the globe. This year’s event features 160k and 80k ultramarathon distances, along with shorter races, and includes a full cultural celebration with local food, music, ceremonies and more.
