The final weekend of March saw 41 races on UltraRunning Magazine’s North American race calendar. In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we check on race results from Arizona, North Carolina, Utah and Georgia. Congratulations to everyone who raced this weekend. Crown King Scramble
We start off in the old mining town of Crown King, Arizona, for one of the state’s classic trail races, the Crown King Scramble. A total of 275 runners completed the uphill 50k point-to-point race on Saturday, with top honors in the women’s contest going to Ailsa MacDonald in 4:40:17. MacDonald placed fifth overall. Isabella Poulos was the second woman across the line in 5:02:43, followed by Katie McGee (5:14:25) in third.
Kevin Taddonio won the men’s race in 4:13:17. Zach Lepley finished runner-up in 4:15:38, and Cody McKesson (4:31:40) snagged the final podium spot in third.

Umstead 100
Our second stop takes us to William B. Umstead State Park in Raleigh, North Carolina, for the 31st running of the Umstead 100 Mile Endurance Run. One hundred runners earned their Umstead buckles this year, including men’s winner Brendan Connell, who completed eight 12.50-mile out-and-back laps in a speedy time of 13:58:34. Caleb Clark was second in 14:09:35, and Jim Sweeney (14:52:12) took third.
Sierra DeGroff broke the tape in the women’s race, winning and placing sixth overall in 16:32:12. Danielle Andolina was F2 and eighth overall in 16:47:26. Amy Johnson took third and rounded out the overall top ten in 17:41:11.

Behind the Rocks
The 12th running of the Behind the Rocks Ultra featured 50k and 50-mile ultramarathons on some of Moab, Utah’s best trails. The larger of the two events, the 50k, saw 207 runners cross the line under the 12-hour cutoff to earn an official finish. First place in the women’s race went to Mary Baughman in 4:45:27, good for third overall. Rachel Lawrence was second in 5:37:26, and Britt Helgaas (5:47:42) rounded out the women’s podium.
Alex Johnson cruised to victory in the men’s race, nearly 20 minutes ahead of the next competitor in 4:09:54. Matthew Jenkins was second in 4:29:34, while Tyler Hudson was M3 and fourth overall in 5:08:54.

The Georgia Death Race
We close up shop for the weekend in Blairsville, Georgia, at the Georgia Death Race. A total of 180 runners carried their one-pound railroad spikes all 74 miles along the point-to-point course to earn a 2026 GDR finish. Jack Elvin took home the men’s title in 14:07:49. Colby Mosshart ran to a second-place finish in 14:14:50. Brian Beal (14:18:39) came in third.
Brianna Grigsby ran the third-fastest female course time ever to win the women’s contest in 14:20:00, good for fourth overall. Kathryn Van Orden was runner-up and ninth overall in 15:34:04, while Nobie Clark (17:00:40) took third.
