The last weekend of 2025 saw 11 North American ultramarathons on the UltraRunning Magazine race calendar, including events in Tennessee, Washington and Missouri. Trail of Fears
We lead things off in Jackson, Tennessee, for the Trail of Fears backyard ultra, where participants had one hour to tackle a 4.3-mile trail loop every hour on the hour. There were 37 runners who completed at least one lap at this year’s event, with top honors in the men’s contest going to Abraham Kane, who paced the way with 19 laps and 81.7 miles. Second place and the assist went to Zach Allen with 77.4 miles. Samuel Kane (68.8 miles) came in third. Lindsay Phenix ran the most laps in the women’s race, winning with 64.5 miles and placing fifth overall. Marylou Corino finished second female and tied for seventh overall with 51.6 miles. Sierra Kane was the third-place female with 43 miles.

Loop Out the Year
Next, we travel to Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood, Washington, for the Loop Out the Year 6-hour and 8-hour fixed-timed races. In Saturday’s 8-hour event, Kristen O’Brien claimed the women’s victory and finished third overall, covering 44.9 miles. Mackenzie Kurtz finished second female and fourth overall with 42.9 miles. Carshena Harvin rounded out the women’s podium and was fifth overall with 42.25 miles. In the men’s race, Jeffrey Barrington secured the win, completing 56.3 miles. Ryan McIrvin was second with 48.95 miles. William Lancaster (41.55 miles) finished third-place male and sixth overall.

Run for the Ranch
Our final stop takes us to Springfield, Missouri, for the 26th running of Ozark Mountain Ridge Runners (OMRR) Run for the Ranch. Six runners completed an ultramarathon distance in Saturday’s 6-hour event, led by men’s winner Derek Chambers, who finished with 36.02 miles (11 laps) in 5:37:02. Amanda Toliver ran to the women’s victory and earned a second-place overall finish with 32.74 miles (10 laps) in 5:29:09. Other ultra distance finishers include: Matthew McKay (32.74 miles in 5:33:53), Sophi Allen (32.74 in 5:38:57), Julie Anna (29.47 in 4:39:54), and Sarah Bauer (29.47 in 5:25:18).
