Winter is hanging on strong across the west, but races around the country are moving forward as spring inches closer. What’s Up in Ultra highlights for the weekend of March 11 include the USATF National 50k Road Championship in New York, a 50/50 in Marin County and plenty of other goodies in between. As always, you can check out our complete UltraRunning Calendar for more.
For the second straight weekend, we have a USATF National Championship, this time on the East Coast in East Islip, New York, with the Greater Long Island Running Club (Caumsett) 50k on Sunday, March 12. While the full list of entrants is not available, we can bet that this flat course will deliver some of the fastest 50k times of the year. The certified course is a 5k loop run 10 times on the paths of Heckscher State Park and features views of the Great South Bay with Fire Island as the backdrop. There will be $3,000 in prize money split across the podium. An additional $1,000 will be awarded if the first female 50k finisher breaks Emily Harrison’s 2014 record time of 3 hours and 15 minutes or, if the first male 50k finisher breaks the record of 2 hours, 48 minutes and 56 seconds set by Tyler Jermann in 2017. There is also a $1,500 bonus if either CJ Albertson‘s American record of 2 hours, 38 minutes and 43 seconds or Des Linden’s record of 2 hours, 59 minutes and 54 seconds are broken. Read: Caumsett USATF 50k National Championships by Lin Gentling. Registration is still open for the race. Do any of our readers out there know who’s running? Let us know in the comments below.
In the Marin Headlands just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, we have the Marin Ultra Challenge 50k/50-mile races on Saturday, March 11. Starting on the black sands of Rodeo Beach, the two courses loop through the majority of the stunning coastal trails gathering roughly 11,000 and 6,000 feet of elevation gain, respectively. The weather forecast is calling for plenty of precipitation, so the 400-plus participants can expect a sloppy day. Podium finishers in the 50-miler will split a $1,800 prize purse.
Grand Rivers, Kentucky, is where we find the 19th annual Land Between The Lakes 60k/50-mile event on Saturday. Running along the shoreline of the Kentucky Lake and then proceeding into the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, this course offers spectacular vistas of both Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. Registration is still open on RunSignup with 25 spots in the 50-mile and 16 in the 60k.
Back on the West Coast, we have the relatively new Siuslaw Dunes 50k in Florence, Oregon on Saturday. The coastal course traverses a wild tapestry of terrain, including ancient open sand dunes, old growth rainforest, stream fords and remote ocean beaches. Starting and finishing at historic Honeyman State Park, the gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and Siuslaw National Forest, the anticipation is high for the second edition of this event that has been canceled for the last two years.
Additional races found on our UltraRunning Calendar include the Dirty Duo 50k in North Vancouver, British Columbia, the Seneca Greenway Trail Marathon & 50k in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and the Antelope Canyons Ultras 55k/50m/100m races in Page, Arizona, all starting on Saturday, March 11, as well as the Prickly Pear 50k in San Antonio, Texas, on Sunday, March 12.
