Who’s feeling a little midweek Black Canyon hangover? Whether you’re still a bit dehydrated after racing in the heat, watching the incredible live coverage for hours on end, volunteering at an aid station or crewing for a runner, we can all agree that what Aravaipa put together last weekend was nothing short of incredible. The next Golden Ticket race is Saturday, April 23 at the Canyons 100k in Auburn, California.
The good news is you still have a few days to recover and recharge your batteries to get ready for another action packed weekend on our UltraRunning Calendar.
We stay in the desert for the headliner of this weekend’s festivities in Las Vegas, the Jackpot Ultrarunning Festival. With 6/12/24/48/72-hour races plus a 50-miler and the USATF 100-mile Road National Championships on Friday, February 18, this event is about as stout as they come.
On the women’s side, defending champion Stefanie Flippin of Evergreen, Colorado, is back to battle her teammates the #2 UltraRunner of 2021 Camille Herron of Warr Acres, Oklahoma, and Nicole Monette of Oxford, Michigan, who was third at the Desert Solstice 100-miler in December. Other contenders include Julie Kheyfets of New York City who won the Habanero Hundred in August of 2021 and Catrin Jones of Victoria, British Columbia, who competed in the 2018 IAU 100k World Championships.
For the men, we have our #3 UltraRunner of 2021 Arlen Glick of Massillon, Ohio, who won four 100-milers last year, Mark Hammond of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, the 2021 Brazos Bend 100 champion, as well as the 2019 Jackpot champion, Alex Nichols of Colorado Springs, Colorado, who was 10th at the 2021 Western States Endurance Run and Patrick Reagan of Savannah, Georgia, who won the Daufuskie Island 39.3-miler just a month ago.
Our very own editor, Amy Clark, is lining up at the PNW classic Hagg Lake 50k in Forest Grove, Oregon, on Saturday, February 19. In what is typically a muddy slopfest, with the recent warm weather, this year’s 20th edition might be nearly bone dry.
Bring your traction devices if you’re escaping the lower 48. The Sustina 100 and Little Su 50 in Big Lake, Alaska, feature single-loop courses on frozen rivers. The forecast is calling for snow every single day this week in Big Lake, so if you’re lining up in Alaska, we salute you mightily and request a race report, please.
Additional races on the UltraRunning Calendar include the Destin Beach Ultra Runs 50k in Destin, Florida, on Sunday, the Holiday Lake 50k in Appomattox, Virginia, Louisville’s Lovin’ the Hills 50k in Louisville, Kentucky, the Moab Red Hot 55k in Moab, Utah, and the Fourmidable 50k in Cool, California on Saturday.
Can Flippin defend her title? Will Glick keep his winning ways rolling? Will the wily veterans Herron and Hammond take the titles? Or do you see an underdog making their mark in Vegas? Prognosticators should part ways with their predictions below and if we forgot a race you’re lining up at this weekend, leave a note in the comments so we can all follow along with What’s up in Ultra in your corner of the country.

I’m excited to see how Brittany Charboneau does in today’s Moab Red Hot 55K. An elite-level road marathoner, she is coming on strong in trail (she won Pike’s Peak marathon and ran a 3:59 50K last year). This is her longest run ever, and she is building up for Lake Sonoma 50 in April.
Will be fun to follow along! I think Tyler Green is racing too.
You’d almost think Camille took some vindication from being rated second-best with a new masters & overall 100-mile WR at Jackpot! Either her or Incredible Hulk, you won’t like them when they’re angry, ha ha.
