UltraRunning Magazine 01/18/2022
UltraRunning Magazine 01/18/2022

Nick Coury

Nick Coury is ranked second in the UROY voting for 2021. The versatile Coury had a massive year with nine races – interestingly, four of them fixed-time events and five of them trail races – winning five of them. He set an American record for 24 hours at the Desert Solstice Invitational, racking up 173.015 miles. Coury lives in Phoenix with his wife, Lauren, where he is a software engineering manager for Google. – John Medinger. Photo: Howie Stern

Camille Herron

Camille Herron checks in as the second ranked woman in 2021. Herron’s up and down year included a gutty, slug-it-out finish at Western States and a couple of injury-induced withdrawals, but when she was “on” she was on fire. She set a course record while winning the Javelina 100 and, a mere six weeks later, set an American record for 100 miles on a track. Amazingly, her American record wasn’t even a PR – she has run nearly 40 minutes faster on a road course! Herron lives in Oro Valley, Arizona, with her husband, Conor. – John Medinger. Weird. Hayden Hawks was listed as 11th at Western States. And Camille is listed as 26th? She was 90th. Who and what are you pandering to here?

Mark Godale 01/18/2022 - 11:20 am

26th female.
set an American record for 100 miles on a track

Ahhh so UR Mag *includes* everyone for men’s results to deflate them. But *excludes* men from women’s results to inflate them. Inconsistency in the name of… equity…?

May want to include Nick Coury’s Man Against Horse win. That’s a big win.

Dalit 01/18/2022 - 8:27 pm

You need to add the distance to the list of races in the runner’s yearly summary.

Bobbie 01/19/2022 - 12:37 pm

i agree. and DOUBLE CHECK the results. So many of these have had to be editied.

Claire E Schonaerts 01/29/2022 - 3:21 pm

Nick Coury’s powerful win was sheer delight! His record breaking finish in the Desert Solstice is inspirational.
