While extreme winter weather swept across much of the country this weekend, forcing several races to be canceled or postponed and adding extra challenges for many others, more than 20 ultramarathons still took place across North America. In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we highlight results from Alabama, California, Idaho and Florida. Mountain Mist
The 32nd annual Mountain Mist 50K went down Saturday in Huntsville, Alabama, under cold temperatures and frozen trail conditions. Despite the weather, 286 runners still completed the the challenging course under the 9.5-hour cutoff time. In the men’s race, Gatlin Holland sped around the northern Alabama trails to secure the win in 4:00:41. Max Simpson was the second runner across the line in 4:26:24. Dylan Glass (4:33:08) rounded out the men’s podium in third. Top honors in the women’s race went to Ruth Wamack in 5:16:59. Katie Lance finished runner-up in 5:40:38, and Emily Crispi (6:00:38) came in third.

Golden Gate Trail Classic
Our second stop takes us to San Francisco, California, for the Golden Gate Trail Classic (50-mile and 50k races). There were 164 runners who completed Saturday’s 50k event, paced by women’s winner Julie Mooney who raced to victory in 5:13:06. Kyler Joy Casselman was the second woman finisher in 5:18:50. Andrea Kiwala (5:27:16) snagged third. Noah Seto won the men’s event in 4:30:25. Chris Portella ran to second in 4:40:31. Will Brown (4:44:00) was third.

Wilson Creek Frozen 50K
Our next stop takes us to the Wilson Creek trail system southwest of Boise, Idaho, for the 10th running of the Wilson Creek Frozen 50K. In the men’s race, my man Anthony Jacobs ran to victory in 4:21:51, improving on his two previous second place race finishes (2020 and 2023). Case Vander Ploeg took second in 4:29:06. Weston Homa (4:34:16) came in third. Emily Soulek clocked a time of 5:33:53 to win the women’s race. Soulek placed fifth overall. Rita Krantz finished F2 and eighth overall in 5:47:34. Alexandra Warzecha (5:56:42) completed the women’s podium in third and was tenth overall. In total, 82 runners completed the 50k.

Clearwater Marathon & Running Festival
We wrap things up in Clearwater, Florida, at the eighth running of the Clearwater Marathon Running Festival. Sunday’s 50k ultra distance event saw a tightly contested battle in the women’s race, with Kate Kornucik (4:25:24) crossing the line just 45 seconds ahead of second place finisher Kelly Duffy (4:26:10). Kornucik (fourth) and Duffy (fifth) both cracked the top five overall. Jennifer Loza was the third female and eighth overall finisher in 4:35:45. Duane Wesseman took home the men’s title in a speedy time of 3:34:51. Ryan Ngo was M2 in 4:13:21. Stephen Stronach (4:17:43) claimed third.
