The first weekend of September was filled with exciting ultramarathon action across North America. In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we dive into results from Utah, Minnesota, Arizona and Quebec, Canada. Congratulations to everyone who raced this weekend. Wasatch 100
We kick things off at the 45th annual Wasatch 100 where just under 350 runners set off to experience “100 miles of heaven and hell” in Utah’s beautiful and rugged Wasatch Mountain Range. In the men’s race, Wasatch 100 veteran Jose Cruz won for the second time in three years in 20:38:06. Josh Griffin finished just behind in 20:48:56, and Tyler Fannin (21:16:28) took third. Isabella Poulos became the 16th women in Wasatch history to finish in under 24 hours on her way to winning the women’s contest and placing sixth overall in 23:45:31. Teresa Kaiser was the second female and 10th overall finisher in 24:44:15. Alexis Crellin (24:57:58) came in third. Full finisher list here.
Superior Fall Trail Races
Our second stop takes us to Two Harbors, Minnesota, for the ninth-oldest 100-miler in the United States, the Superior 100. This year’s 100-mile event saw176 runners finish under the 38-hour cutoff time, with top female honors going to Rachel Turi in 25:36:15. Shannon Hogan was the second woman across the line in 25:47:42. Andrea Louwagie (27:40:00) ran to third. Jakob Wartman moved into first after the 100k mark and raced to the finish line to earn the men’s title in 20:13:02. John Vallez claimed second (20:39:19), and Joe Laue (21:06:33) rounded out the men’s podium in third. The 50-mile results are not yet available. Full 100-mile results here.
Mogollon Monster 100
Next, we head to Peyton, Arizona, for another of this week’s challenging 100-mile ultramarathons: the Mogollon Monster 100. The 14th annual Mogollon Monster was dominated by Jeremy Humphrey who led wire-to-wire en route to winning the men’s contest in 21:07:51. Tim Vail finished runner-up in 22:38:09. Craig Gillis (22:40:07) crossed the line less than 2 minutes later in third. Colleen Moffatt won the women’s race in 27:52:30. Sarah Dasher placed second (29:18:58), and Jessica Schiller (31:00:51) completed the women’s podium in third. Full results here.
Ultra-Trail Harricana of Canada
Our final stop takes us to La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada, for the competitive Ultra-Trail Harricana of Canada (UTHC). In the flagship event, the UTHC 125k race, results show that Valérie Arsenault ran a dominant race to secure the women’s crown and finish seventh overall in 16:46:54. Marline Cote ran to a second place finish in 18:54:59. Melina Dubois-Verret came in third (19:08:51). In the men’s race, Xavier St-Cyr and Mathieu Blanchard finished hand-in-hand to share the victory in 15:12:33. Third place also resulted in a tie, with Matthieu Saliou and Laurent Bouchard finishing at the same time in 15:20:19.
