Needles 50k captured the essence of ultrarunning. I felt the beauty of the natural world coincide with the rawness of human nature. As much as I avoid the word ‘should,’ the Needles 50k event was a reminder of what trail and ultrarunning should be. It embodied the authentic essence of why we are all doing this – to see beautiful places, meet inspiring people in the ultrarunning community, challenge our minds and bodies, and eat home made quinoa.

What makes this run so cool is the start/finish/one-and-only aid station is all rolled into one pop-up tent accompanied by an RV. And it sits right behind Julian Station which is a gigantic barn that houses Julian Hard Cider tasting room, a Mead tasting room, Beer tasting room, and a Mexican restaurant. With a fun group of runners who you see and converse with throughout the loops, then throw in the alcohol being so close, this run is potentially a party waiting to happen.

The 26th annual Howl at the Moon 8 Hour Ultra Marathon held in Danville, Illinois, is the largest timed ultra in the United States, and this year was a tale of two halves.

It is difficult to believe that this all happened. The STYR Labs Badwater 135 Ultramarathon is the most storied event in the ultra-community while my mind realistically unattainable and virtually impossible to get in. I was equally shocked and amazed that I was selected on my first application attempt and I can sincerely say I fully enjoyed every minute.

The race’s name, “Burning River,” is of course ironic, harkening back to the numerous times the Cuyahoga River, once one of America’s most polluted waterways, actually caught on fire.

This year was our fourth running of the Cacapon 12 Hour Challenge. The challenging five mile loop features 800 feet of climbing and lots of gnarly, tough and technical trail! This year’s entry list featured 43 combined previous finishes (25 individual athletes) and 43 new runners—nice symmetry!
