August starts off with a bang on our North American UltraRunning Calendar with the USATF 50k National Championships in New Hampshire, an inaugural 50-mile race on Kauai with a massive prize purse, a single loop 100k in Oregon and more than we could possibly list below.
The Ragged 75 Stage Race and 50k in Danbury, New Hampshire, is three days of rugged trail running in and around Mount Ragged, Sunapee and Kearsarge. The stage race kicks off Friday, August 4, and culminates with the longest day on Sunday—a 50k with roughly 6,300 feet of vertical gain. In total, all three days accumulate 15,000 feet in 75 total miles. The final day also serves at the USATF 50k National Championships for the third time in five years.
Flying 10-plus hours west to the Hawaiian island of Kauai, we find the Kauai 50 taking place in Kalaheo on Saturday, August 5. Featuring four, 12.5-mile laps that gain around 800 feet each on the private land of the Kauai Coffee Company, this first-year race boasts a prize purse of $50,000. Winners will take home $15,000, with $5,000 going to second, $3,000 for third, $1,500 for fourth and $500 for fifth. The course has sections that run right along the coastline for guaranteed breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.
In Oakridge, Oregon, is the 21st edition of the Waldo 100k on Saturday. The single loop course starts and finishes at the Willamette Pass Ski Area, and is mostly single-track trail with more than 11,000 feet of elevation gain and loss. The high point of the course is Maiden Peak at 7,818 feet, part of the Cascade Range. Read: Behind Waldo 100k by Amy Clark.
