Memorial Day weekend featured 38 ultramarathons on the UltraRunning Magazine race calendar. In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we check in on results from Wisconsin, Ontario, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. We wish everyone a safe Memorial Day as we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Sugar Badger 50/50
We kick things off at Belleville Community Park in Belleville, Wisconsin, for the Sugar Badger 50/50 trail races (50-mile and 50k ultra-distances). Saturday’s 50-mile event saw 86 finishers, paced by female winner Diane Rathje, who ran the second-fastest course time ever (7:23:40) on her way to a second-place overall finish. Erica Carlson was the second woman to cross the line in 7:49:17, earning her third place on the overall podium. Andrea Stabelfeldt (8:16:15) was third and sixth overall. Brian Hall was victorious in the men’s race, winning in 7:09:42. Scott Kent (7:54:19) finished runner-up, and Peter Wyant came in third (8:10:58).
A total of 94 runners crossed the finish line in the 50k distance, with Martin Earl running away from the competition to secure the win in a new course-record time of 3:12:38. Dustin Parish ran to second (3:51:40), and Jeff Friedman rounded out the men’s podium in third (3:59:24). Theresa Howe won the women’s race and finished fourth overall in 4:21:22 (second-fastest women’s 50k time). Laura Klosterboer (4:44:53) was second and seventh overall, and Alexandria Sielaff placed third (5:01:54). Full results here.
Sulphur Springs Trail Race
Next, we travel north of the border to Hamilton, Ontario, for Ontario’s longest continuously running ultramarathon and only Western States qualifier, the Sulphur Springs Trail Race (50k, 50-mile, 100k and 100-mile events). Since the race featured four ultra distances, we’re only going to list the winners here, but you can find all the Sulphur Springs Trail Race results here.
Paul Vanoostveen shattered the course record in the 100-mile contest, winning in a blistering-fast time of 14:38:21. Molly Hurford finished first female and third overall, running the second-fastest women’s course time ever in 17:22:46. Karen Holland set a new women’s course record in the 100k (9:55:09) on her way to finishing top female and sixth overall. Robert Brouillette won for the men, running a new men’s course best time of 8:07:22. Dropping down to the 50-miler, results show that Juan Zorrilla was victorious for the men in 7:36:44. Rina Atienza (9:00:53) finished first female and eighth overall. Tanis Bolton claimed top female honors in the 50k with a winning time of 4:14:06 (sixth overall). Alex Forte won for the men and set a new 50k course mark to beat in 3:22:02.
Bubbletown What The Duck
Our third stop takes us to Spring Meadows Park in Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania, for the Bubbletown What The Duck, a 12-hour fixed-timed ultramarathon. This year’s event had 195 participants run at least one lap, with the overall distance award going to Anthony Reynolds with 49 total laps (69.5 miles). Braxton Stroup finished second male with 43 laps (61 miles), and Spencer Van Sycoc was third (also with 43 laps but a slower overall finishing time). Katie Hooper ran the farthest in the women’s race and took tenth overall with 39 laps (55.35 miles). McKenzie McGee was second (38 laps – 53.9 miles), and Gina Ruck came in third (35 laps- 51.1 miles). Full results here.
May Madness 50k
Last but not least, we journey to Hoffman, North Carolina, for the May Madness 50k. Tiff Joh broke the tape in the women’s contest, winning in 4:58:51. Christelle Doullet finished second (5:18:05), and Kimberly Dirst claimed third (5:37:22). Anthony Kamps won the men’s race in 3:41:32, the third-fastest men’s course time ever. Jubal Stokes came in second (3:39:39), and Derek Riley (4:08:55) completed the podium in third. Full results here.
