Jon Olsen
Jon Olsen, 39, a teacher from Modesto, California is the number 2 runner of the year. Olsen won the World 24-Hour Championships in Holland and later set an American Record at 100 miles, becoming the first American to crack the 12-hour barrier. Ironically, the American record had stood for 24 years when he broke it, but Olsen then held the record for less than two months before Zach Bitter lowered it to 11:47:21. (Peter van Trijen photo)

Pam Smith
Western States 100 winner Pam Smith is the number 2 female runner of the year. Smith, a pathologist from Salem, Oregon, was stellar on trails, road and track, setting a world track best and posting the second fastest women’s 100-mile time ever with a 14:11:26 clocking at the Desert Solstice Run.
