On the final weekend of September, with the aspens exploding in peak color, nearly 700 runners gathered in Colorado’s Arkansas Valley to take on two days of high-altitude trail races: the West Line Winder 30k & 50k on Saturday in Buena Vista, and the Sawatch Ascent 50k, on Sunday, down the road in Nathrop.

We began our grassroots campaign in late 2020, and the Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra was born. The name is a nod to those who go beyond the limits of what others—or even, themselves—may think is possible.
