While we’re still two weeks away from the official start of summer, it’s really starting to feel like summer vacation has commenced across the country. On our UltraRunning Calendar, we have over 40 races going on this weekend to help launch you into the last couple of weeks of “spring training.”
Arguably the biggest event on the list is the 26th annual Kettle Moraine 100 Endurance Runs 100-mile, 100k, 50k and 38-mile races, June 10 – 11 in La Grange, Wisconsin. All courses are out-and-backs featuring approximately 80% wooded terrain with the remainder meandering through gentle prairie and marshlands, along with rolling hills and “silent killer” steep hills scattered throughout. There is a $250 prize purse for the female and male winners in the 100-miler, as well as an additional $250 for any course record set. In Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania, we have the 44th consecutive Laurel Highlands 70.5-mile and 50k individual and relay races on Saturday. Both distances are point-to-point with the marquee 70.5-miler covering the entire Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail beginning at Ohiopyle State Park and finishing in the Conemaugh Gorge. Proceeds from the event are donated to the Laurel Highlands Trail through the Pennsylvania Parks and Forest Foundation. The events are sold out.
Located near the entrance to the historic Yosemite National Park in Fish Camp, California, is the Shadow of the Giants single-loop 50k also on Saturday. The run takes participants past jaw-dropping 3,000-year-old giant Sequoias in the infamous Nelder Grove in the Sierra National Forest. The race is sold out for 2023.
Additional races of note found on our extensive UltraRunning Calendar this weekend include the Arkansas Backyard Ultra Championship in Cotter, Arkansas, the Flagstaff Extreme Big Pines Trail Runs 53k in Flagstaff, Arizona, the McKenzie River Trail Run 50k in Blue River, Oregon, the Old Gabe 50k in Bozeman, Montana, the Sinks Canyon Trail Races 50k in Lander, Wyoming, and the Windsor Castle 5/10-hour races in Smithfield, Virginia, all on Saturday, June 10. On Friday, check out the Santa Monica Mountains 100k and 100-miler in Malibu, California.
