In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we check in on results from Arkansas, Illinois, California and Utah. Let’s get to it.
We start at Camp Ouachita, near Williams Junction, Arkansas, for the Arkansas Traveller 100, the eighth-oldest 100-miler in the United States. This year’s race challenged runners with hot temperatures leading to a lower-than-normal finisher rate. One runner who wasn’t affected by the heat was Brendan Connell, who ran the fastest time in the race’s 33-year history. Connell smashed the previous course record by nearly 28 minutes, winning in 15:08:34. Matt Pruitt ran to second in 17:38:24, and James Ebert completed the podium in third (19:04:17). For the women, Ashley Nordell held on to win in 20:39:49 and finish tenth overall. Lauren Sewell (20:55:24) placed second, and Alyssa McClellan took third (23:13:57). Full results here.
Our next stop takes us to Colona, Illinois, for the flat and fast Hennepin Hundred (100-mile, 50-mile and 50k races), the state’s only point-to-point, all-trail ultramarathon. In the 100-mile race, first-place female honors went to Wendy Krause in 19:10:01. Brittney Yuronich (19:46:55) took second, and Dee Brandes came in third (20:03:20). On the men’s side, Reese Slobodianuk led wire-to-wire to take the win in a blazing fast time of 13:14:56 (that’s a 7:56 pace for 100 miles)! Brian Martin (14:29:23) finished second, and Andy Markevicus took third (16:15:35). Full results from all three race distances here.
Out west, we journey to Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, near San Diego, California, for the 13th running of the Cuyamaca 100k. In another race that saw hot weather this weekend, Cuyamaca runners had to navigate temperatures that climbed into the low 90s. On the women’s side, Catherine Castro Villicana earned the victory and finished sixth overall in 12:49:11. Kara Olivito (13:05:15) snagged second and eighth overall, and Jayme Baldwin rounded out the podium in 13:21:45, good for ninth place overall. For the men, Greg Miller took the lead on loop two and never looked back, winning in 11:02:40. German Verduzco (11:16:44) claimed second, and Michael Klein finished third (11:51:34). Full results here.
Finally, we head to Kaysville, Utah, for the third annual DC Peaks 50 (50-mile and 55k events). In the 50-miler, Grant Barnette was the first to cross the finish line in 7:35:06, good for a new course record. Zachary Garner (7:47:22) placed second, and Alex Johnson ran his way to third (8:00:11). For the women, Sabrina Stanely won in 8:52:24, finishing seventh overall and setting a new female course record.
