Our Ultra Weekend Recap on October 1, 2023, recaps a 50k on the Oregon Coast, a large 50k in North Carolina, a new course record at The Bear 100 in Utah and more.
Starting off on Saturday, at the 10th Perpetua Coast 50k in Yachats, Oregon, Lindsay Eysenbach out of Seattle, Washington, posted the second-fastest time on record for the win in 4 hours, 38 minutes and 26 seconds. Not far back in second was Allie Schaich of Portland, Oregon, with a time of 4 hours, 53 minutes and 7 seconds. Third place was Grace Perkins from Bend, Oregon, in 5 hours, 9 minutes and 3 seconds. Taking the men’s title was Dylan Humberger from Ashland, Oregon, in 4 hours, 7 minutes and 30 seconds. Keith Laverty out of Bainbridge Island, Washington, scored second in 4 hours, 19 minutes and 13 seconds. Rounding out the podium was another Ashland runner, Jace Ives, in 4 hours, 22 minutes and 13 seconds. Scope the full results here.
Out east in Danbury, North Carolina, was the Pilot Mountain to Hanging Rock Ultra 50k and 50-mile races also on Saturday. The 50k had 196 finishers with Samuel Haynes of Cana, Virginia, winning it all in 4 hours, 28 and 22 seconds. About 20 minutes back was Noble Demis out of Boone, North Carolina, in 4 hours, 49 minutes and 35 seconds. Marc Hirsch from Greensboro, North Carolina, rounded out the men’s podium in 4 hours, 55 minutes and 18 seconds. Julia Draughn of Mount Airy, North Carolina, won the women’s contest in 5 hours, 56 minutes and 7 seconds. Second place was secured by Devanise Vitti in 6 hours, 9 minutes and 43 seconds, and third was Kara Smeltz in 6 hours, 13 minutes and 46 seconds — both runners are from Durham, North Carolina. The Bear 100 is a beastly point-to-point ultra. This year was the 25th edition, and a record 240 runners finished the race, topping last year’s 235. Winning for the women was local runner Kathryn Graham of Logan, Utah, in 22 hours, 25 minutes and 35 seconds. Christiana Rugloski from Denver, Colorado, scored runner-up honors in 25 hours, 28 minutes and 57 seconds, and Rebekah Rose out of Lewiston, Utah, came in third in 25 hours, 34 minutes and 18 seconds. 23-year-old Zachary Garner from Provo, Utah, won and set a new course record in 17 hours, 11 minutes and 51 seconds. About 2 hours back were two Salt Lake City runners: first was Jake Krong in 19 hours, 9 minutes and 56 seconds, and next was Jesse Rich in 19 hours, 13 minutes and 35 seconds.
