This weekend saw 43 races on the ultramarathon race calendar, including two UltraRunning Magazine Old School Ultras taking place on opposite sides of the country. Let’s dive into the action in this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap.
Our first Old School Ultra took place in Wartrace, Tennessee, at the 46th running of the Strolling Jim ™ 41.2-mile race. The popular event had 152 finishers, with two runners securing their coveted sub-5-hour gold finisher shirts. Top honors went to Miller Groome in 4:45:08, finishing just ahead of second-place John Kruckeberg (4:46:48) and third-place finisher Joseph Spear (5:07:51). In the women’s race, Caitlin Jones took the win in 5:31:19 (eighth overall), Micah Morgan finished second and tenth overall (5:38:56), and Erica Gillespie rounded out the podium in third (5:57:50). Rainy weather hit the West Coast this weekend, making for a challenging day at our second Old School Ultra, the Miwok 100k. This California classic saw a finisher rate of only 61.7%, with 252 finishers out of 497 starters. In a competitive women’s race, Lindsey Dwyer came out on top, winning in a time of 10:44:54 and finishing fifth overall. Samantha Creath took second and seventh overall (10:50:26), and Zuzana Trnovcova placed third and eighth overall (10:56:26). In the men’s race, Robert Ressl put forth a dominant effort, winning by nearly an hour in 9:06:08. Jeffrey Diament took second (10:02:03), and Michael Ambrose finished third (10:09:40). Rain and mud are nothing new for runners at the McDonald Forest 50k, held annually in Oregon State University’s McDonald Forest and Starker Forest in Corvallis, Oregon. This year’s edition marked the 28th running of the event with 183 runners completing the challenging course. In a tightly contested men’s race, Jonathan McInerney took the win in 4:41:17, finishing just 24 seconds ahead of second-place Colin Welk (4:41:41). Yassine Diboun took third (4:45:48). On the women’s side, Sierra Tucker won first female in 5:10:04, followed by Megan Myers in second (5:22:58) and Melissa Quinn in third (5:44:12). Full results here.
Next, we head to Kirtland, Ohio, for the 12th running of the Outrun 24. There were 102 runners competing in the event, seeing how far they could go in 24 hours on the 1.00244-mile USATF-certified loop course. In the women’s event, Laura Hernandez placed first with 93.2 miles, Molly Katusin took second (87.2 miles) and Katie Vasko finished third (81.2 miles). In the men’s race, Adam Gloyeske took the win with 120.3 miles, Steve Kirby came in second (114.3 miles) and Matthew Palmer claimed third (112.3). Full results here.
