Welcome back to our Ultra Weekend Recap highlighting ultras from across the country. We kick things off with a 100-miler in Virginia, then head south into North Carolina for a 50k and cross the continent for a 50/50 in Reno, Nevada.
At the 27th Massanutten Mountain Trails (MMT) 100 Mile Run in Fort Valley, Virginia, on Saturday, May 20 Rachel Corrigan from Blacksburg, Virginia, won the women’s race in 23 hours, 50 minutes and 48 seconds. Runner-up Amy Stulman out of Falls Church, Virginia, came through in 26 hours, 34 minutes and 48 seconds, and third place was Rhea Loney of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 26 hours, 44 minutes and 41 seconds. Hunter Shuler from Broadway, Virginia, ran what appears to be the fourth-fastest time the course has ever witnessed in 18 hours, 4 minutes and 57 seconds for the win. He was followed by Emanuel King of Mill Hall, Pennsylvania, in 19 hours, 3 minutes and 19 seconds, and John Andersen out of Crozet, Virginia, rounded out the podium in 21 hours, 1 minute and 1 second. Also on Saturday, Burnsville, North Carolina, played host to the Quest for the Crest 50k. This year’s race saw a record 191 finishers, with Grant Barnette from Salt Lake City, Utah, winning in 7 hours, 5 minutes and 22 seconds. He outlasted Silverton, Colorado’s Avery Collins who finished in 7 hours, 23 minutes and 12 seconds, and Justin Weinmeister of Knoxville, Tennessee, who took third in 8 hours, 28 minutes and 22 seconds. Katie O’Regan from Lititz, Pennsylvania, won for the women in 9 hours, 7 minutes and 47 seconds. Amy Markovich of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, came in second in 10 hours, 23 minutes and 50 seconds, and Eileen Klein out of Abingdon, Virginia, was third in 11 hours, 1 minute and 59 seconds. Finally, at the 38th Silver State 50/50 in Reno, Nevada, Katherine Song from Albany, California, won the 50-miler in 9 hours, 1 minute and 59 seconds. Local runner Lisa Daane came in second in 10 hours, 31 minutes and 6 seconds, and Roxana Pana from Woodland, California, came in third in 11 hours, 4 minutes and 45 seconds. Another local runner, Adam Sjolund, won in the third-fastest time the course has ever seen in 6 hours, 59 minutes and 37 seconds. Reno’s Tom Sullivan came in second in 7 hours, 43 minutes and 10 seconds, and Brett Hornig from Ashland, Oregon was third in 8 hours, 4 minutes and 5 seconds.
In the 50k, local runner Lauren Williams won in 5 hours, 28 minutes and 23 seconds, Alina Edwards of Grass Valley, California, was the runner-up in 5 hours, 38 minutes and 58 seconds, and Jill Martin from Verdi, Nevada, took third in 6 hours, 8 minutes and 19 seconds. Ryan Kaiser from Bend, Oregon, won for the men in 4 hours, 20 minutes and 11 seconds, Zander Simone of Reno was the runner-up in 4 hours, 49 minutes and 47 seconds, and Adam Broderick out of Gnarnia, Nevada, came in third in 4 hours, 58 minutes and 35 seconds.
