The UltraRunning Magazine race calendar featured over 58 events this week in the US and Canada. Let’s dive right into the action.

We kick off the Ultra Weekend Recap in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley for the 28th edition of the Massanutten Mountain Trails 100-Mile Run. In the men’s race, Stephen Knight squeaked in just under the 21-hour mark, taking the win in 20:59:05. Michael Hiestand finished second (21:31:32) and Chris Baumer took third (22:00:54). On the women’s side, Justyna Wilson earned a coveted sub-24-hour Massanutten silver buckle and claimed victory in 23:22:33. Sarah Colwell placed second (25:03:44) and Beth Bauer rounded out the podium in third (26:02:42). Full results here.

Next, we head southwest to Burnsville, North Carolina, where runners had to conquer over 12,000 feet of elevation gain over 50k in their Quest for the Crest. Top honors in the female race went to Kate Dohnal with a hard-earned victory in 9:49:50. Dohnal was followed by Jana Fridrichova in second (10:10:09) and Kendra Joseph in third (10:20:41). In the men’s event, Lukas Burrer won in 7:50:03, finishing just 3 minutes ahead of second place, Marek Simko (7:53:15). Rhett Bolick claimed third (8:56:43). In total, 155 runners completed the challenging course. Full results can be found here.

Staying on the East Coast, we drop in on the grueling Cruel Jewel 100 where course records were broken, and an impressive 149 runners earned their Hardrock qualifiers by finishing in under 48 hours. In the men’s race, Ben Quatromoni put on a dominant performance, winning in 21:41:31 and shaving nearly 55 minutes off the previous course best. Peter Mortimer placed second in 24:12:12, and Michael Manganello finished just over a minute behind in third (24:13:46). In the women’s event, Sarah Ostaszewski ran an epic race winning in 24:50:52 (fourth overall) and shattering the course record by over 1 hour and 45 minutes. The second-place female went to Madalyn Nones in 27:43:00 (10th overall and now third-fastest course time) and Rachel Corrigan finished third (28:37:54). Full results here (Cruel Jewel 50 results not yet available).

Heading north, we land in Lutsen, Minnesota, for the 20th running of the rugged and technical Superior Spring Trail Race 50k. Unofficial results show that 215 runners completed the course, with Cheryl Matson leading the way for the women and claiming victory in 5:26:28. Alli Hamholm placed second (5:43:30) and Elizabeth Conklin finished just behind in third (5:44:40). In the men’s race, Scott Wopata took the title in 4:25:28. Aiden Jung finished second (4:34:50) and Matthew Eidenschink placed third (4:39:07). Full results here.

Drew Dinan traded the tropics of the Florida Keys for the trails of Bend, OR. Once living the Jimmy Buffett lifestyle, working on fishing boats and owning only a single pair of flip flops, he now has way too many running shoes in his closet and never hears the end of it from his loving wife. He is on a constant quest to find the best happy hours, likes to complain when it’s cold outside, and one day hopes to travel the country writing reviews on chicken wings.
