The UltraRunning Magazine race calendar featured over 58 events this week in the US and Canada. Let’s dive right into the action.
We kick off the Ultra Weekend Recap in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley for the 28th edition of the Massanutten Mountain Trails 100-Mile Run. In the men’s race, Stephen Knight squeaked in just under the 21-hour mark, taking the win in 20:59:05. Michael Hiestand finished second (21:31:32) and Chris Baumer took third (22:00:54). On the women’s side, Justyna Wilson earned a coveted sub-24-hour Massanutten silver buckle and claimed victory in 23:22:33. Sarah Colwell placed second (25:03:44) and Beth Bauer rounded out the podium in third (26:02:42). Full results here.
Next, we head southwest to Burnsville, North Carolina, where runners had to conquer over 12,000 feet of elevation gain over 50k in their Quest for the Crest. Top honors in the female race went to Kate Dohnal with a hard-earned victory in 9:49:50. Dohnal was followed by Jana Fridrichova in second (10:10:09) and Kendra Joseph in third (10:20:41). In the men’s event, Lukas Burrer won in 7:50:03, finishing just 3 minutes ahead of second place, Marek Simko (7:53:15). Rhett Bolick claimed third (8:56:43). Staying on the East Coast, we drop in on the grueling Cruel Jewel 100 where course records were broken, and an impressive 149 runners earned their Hardrock qualifiers by finishing in under 48 hours. In the men’s race, Ben Quatromoni put on a dominant performance, winning in 21:41:31 and shaving nearly 55 minutes off the previous course best. Peter Mortimer placed second in 24:12:12, and Michael Manganello finished just over a minute behind in third (24:13:46). In the women’s event, Sarah Ostaszewski ran an epic race winning in 24:50:52 (fourth overall) and shattering the course record by over 1 hour and 45 minutes. The second-place female went to Madalyn Nones in 27:43:00 (10th overall and now third-fastest course time) and Rachel Corrigan finished third (28:37:54). Heading north, we land in Lutsen, Minnesota, for the 20th running of the rugged and technical Superior Spring Trail Race 50k. Unofficial results show that 215 runners completed the course, with Cheryl Matson leading the way for the women and claiming victory in 5:26:28. Alli Hamholm placed second (5:43:30) and Elizabeth Conklin finished just behind in third (5:44:40). In the men’s race, Scott Wopata took the title in 4:25:28. Aiden Jung finished second (4:34:50) and Matthew Eidenschink placed third (4:39:07). Full results here.
Finally, we head to Bryce Canyon, Utah, for the Bryce Canyon Ultras. Winners of the four ultra-distance events include (100-mile) Art Hurtado (m) 19:42:50, Lauri Brindley (f) 26:01:17. (50-mile) Lauren Kersjes (f) 9:21:11, Nate Jewkes (m) 7:41:11 and a new course record. (60k) Otto Stefan (m) 6:22:43, Maria Carilli (f) 6:43:09 and second overall. (50k) Jackie Hendrickson (f) 5:46:26 and second overall, Daniel Jones (m) 4:19:11 and a new course record. Full results here.
