This week’s Ultra Weekend Recap covers races from a 50k in California, ultras in Canada, a big 50k in Minnesota and more.
On Saturday at the Golden State 50k in Marina, California, Nick Reshetnikov from Guerneville, California, won and set a new course record in a smoking fast 3 hours, 52 minutes and 40 seconds, on a circuitous course in sandy conditions with 4,000 feet of elevation gain. Carson Clowes of Paso Robles, California, came in second in 4 hours, 14 minutes and 29 seconds, and Leo Pershall out of Fairfax, California, rounded out the podium in 4 hours, 20 minutes and 3 seconds. In the women’s race, Ana Suchey from Gold River, California, won in 5 hours, 22 minutes and 33 seconds. She was followed by Jess Vargo of Santa Cruz, California, in 5 hours, 29 minutes and 7 seconds, and Brynn Pearson from Costa Mesa, California, took third in 5 hours, 44 minutes and 27 seconds. Starting on Friday, June 30 in Baie-Saint-Paul, Québec, the 11th Québec Mega Trail running festival kicked off with the marquee 100-mile race at 8 p.m. Kelsey Hogan from Steady Brook, Newfoundland, won for the women in a new course record time of 24 hours, 34 minutes and 57 seconds. She was followed by Ariel Cudmore of Sainte-Béatrix, Québec, who came in second in 26 hours, 7 minutes and 42 seconds, and Anne Bouchard out of Bromont, Sainte-Béatrix, Québec, rounded out the podium in 27 hours, 54 minutes and 7 seconds. Kevin Biggs from Calgary, Alberta, won the men’s race in 20 hours, 17 minutes and 28 seconds, the fourth-fastest time ever. Pierre-Olivier Campagna of Québec City was the race’s runner up in 21 hours, 55 minutes and 38 seconds, and Philipee Poulin from Beauceville, Québec, rounded out the men’s podium in 22 hours, 24 minutes and 38 seconds. In Afton, Minnesota, at the Afton Trail 50k, Alex Forte from Chicago, Illinois, won in 3 hours, 39 minutes and 1 second. Rishi Gulati came in second in 3 hours, 51 minutes and 5 seconds, and Christian Hall claimed third in 3 hours, 55 minutes and 49 seconds. In the women’s race Erica Mitchell from Minneapolis, Minnesota, took the title in 4 hours, 36 minutes and 7 seconds. Deborah Hudleston of Shoreview, Minnesota, was the runner-up in 4 hours, 54 minutes and 23 seconds, and Maggie Marx out of South Haven, Minnesota, came in third place in 4 hours, 54 minutes and 35 seconds.
