This weekend’s UltraRunning Magazine race calendar included 36 North American events. In the Ultra Weekend Recap, we check in on events in California, Alabama, South Carolina and Utah. Let’s check the timing mats.
We begin in Monterey, California, for the Monterey Ultra 50-mile and Fort Ord Trail Run 50k. In the 50-miler, an unknown runner took the overall win and set a new female course record in a speedy time of 7:31:58. Jenny Jacox finished second woman and eighth overall in 8:47:49. Nicolette Del Sarto (9:26:46) rounded out the podium in third. In the men’s race, Max Cam took the win in 7:34:16. Anthony Correa placed second (8:09:00), and Bryan Botma (8:13:06) came in third.
In the 50k event, Owen Firebaugh crossed the finish line first, winning in 4:19:11. Dylan Flynn ran to second (4:24:34), and Andrew Baker (4:44:37) snagged third. First-place female honors went to Mathilde Giroud in 5:15:59. Monique Messie finished second (5:22:13), and Caitlin Boldt took third (5:37:06). Full results from both races can be found here.
Our second stop takes us to Alabama’s Monte Sano State Park for the 31st running of the Mountain Mist 50k. Over 500 runners showed up to the starting line of the classic event on Saturday, with James Outland racing his way to victory in 4:28:56. Max Simpson finished second in 4:35:55, and Brandon Sullivan (4:38:40) secured the final podium spot in third. On the women’s side, Luci Searels won in 5:32:05. Rachel Biber-Brewer was second (5:35:38), and Jenny Simpson (5:43:06) finished third. (Full results not yet available).
Staying in the south, we shuffle over to Seneca, South Carolina, for the fourth running of the Snowbird Challenge 50k. Kaitlyn Martin led the way in the female contest, winning in 3:56:52 and finishing third overall. Erika Spracher came in second and ninth overall (4:21:03), and Crystal Garrison (4:28:15) took third. In the men’s race, Luis Fuentes won in a new course best time of 3:20:31. Clay Crocker placed second (3:29:44), and James Lafever (3:59:57) finished third. Full results here.
Our final stop takes us to Moab, Utah, for the Arches Ultra 50k and 50-mile. There were 199 runners who crossed the finish line in Saturday’s 50k event, led by Tyler Green in 3:39:45. Ian Gwaltney staked claim to second (3:50:19), and Brydon Anderson (4:03:07) took third. Anna Fisher finished first woman and sixth overall in 4:23:28. Brianna Karboski placed second female and seventh overall (4:28:11), and Emily Evans (5:03:46) snagged the final podium spot in third.
In the 50-mile distance, Casey Brady won for the women, besting the field in a time of 8:55:04. Samantha Hengehold finished second woman (9:09:50), and Sydney Park (9:22:17) came in third. In the men’s contest, Devin Pancake ran away from the field to earn the overall victory in 6:24:49, the second-fastest time in course history. Aidan Connolly finished runner up (7:14:51), and Derek Ball was third (7:19:09). Results from both races here.
