The trend of fast times in 2024 continues in our Ultra Weekend Recap where we saw course records fall at the Bandera races in Texas. Two Canadians from Chilliwack dominated at the HURT 100 in Hawaii and Washingtonians won the long-running Bridle Trails Winter Trail Running Festival 50k in Washington.
Frigid temperatures but dry conditions led to some fast times across the board at the Bandera 100k/50k races in Bandera, Texas, taking place on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Leading the way for the men was Hans Troyer from Newnan, Georgia, who broke Jim Walmsley’s 2016 course record by just under a minute in a smoking-fast time of 7 hours, 45 minutes and 40 seconds. Second place went to Jared Rothlauf out of San Antonio, Texas, in 8 hours, 52 minutes and 27 seconds, and third was Kwok Hin Lai of Helotes, Texas, in 9 hours, 41 minutes and 3 seconds. Collen Chase from Princeton, Massachusetts, won for the women in 10 hours, 32 minutes and 22 seconds, with Atlanta’s Lauren Jones in second with a time of 11 hours, 20 minutes and 40 seconds, and Julia Hargesheimer of San Antonio rounding out the podium in 11 hours, 30 minutes and 58 seconds.
In the accompanying 50k on Sunday, Brandon Miller from Calgary, Canada, bested Kris Brown’s 2022 course record by 12 minutes, clocking 3 hours, 35 minutes and 10 seconds. The runner-up was Christopher Reischel out of Midland, Michigan, with a solid 3 hours, 57 minutes and 51 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in the course’s history. Third went to Bryan Frank of Fort Worth, Texas, with a time of 4 hours, 18 minutes and 44 seconds. Brooklyn, New York’s Katherine Edwards won the women’s contest in 4 hours, 54 minutes and 28 seconds. Second place was secured by Kertu Palo from Palm Springs, California, in 5 hours, 2 minutes and 16 seconds, just 5 minutes ahead of Shaina Couch hailing from Dunlap, Tennessee, who came home in 5 hours, 7 minutes and 56 seconds. Mill Valley’s Katherina Laan ran nearly an identical time to her 2022 race and took second place for the second consecutive year in 26 hours, 51 minutes and 30 seconds. Third was Boulder’s Candice Burt in 29 hours, 40 minutes and 41 seconds. Ihor Verys won the men’s contest in 20 hours, 50 minutes and 9 seconds, and Anthony Lee from Boulder improved his course PR by 5 hours and 30 minutes to claim runner-up honors in 21 hours, 39 minutes and 28 seconds, the tenth-fastest time ever. The race took place the day after a winter storm and the course was wet, muddy, and oh so fun.
Congrats on your win Nate, nice way to kick off 2024!
Thanks Jeffrey, I was sporting my Headlands 50K hat (though I didn’t even run your race due to injury). 🙂
