In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we feature ultramarathon race results from Utah, Arizona, Arkansas, Alabama and Washington. Let’s check in on the action!
Moab’s Red Hot Ultra
We begin under sunny skies in Moab, Utah, for the 19th annual Moab’s Red Hot Ultra (50-mile and 55k ultra distances). In Saturday’s exciting 50-mile race, Tyler Veerman edged out Kyle Curtain to take the win by a mere 5 seconds. Veerman crossed the finish line in 7:49:05, with Curtain hot on his heels in 7:49:10. Jared Steward finished third-place male in 7:57:08. Ashlie Ferguson won the woman’s contest in 10:56:10. Marlee Stevens took second (11:08:58), and Georgia Parks (11:40:31) rounded out the podium in third.
Emily Evans was the first female to cross the line in the 55k event, taking the win in 5:21:44. Chloe Painter ran to second (5:29:11), and Regan Sikes (5:35:08) finished third. In the men’s race, Jonathan Rea cruised to victory in a speedy time of 3:57:13. Alex Johnson placed second (4:11:56), and Brian Babyak (4:32:15) came in third. Full results here.
Copper Corridor
Our next stop takes us to Superior, Arizona, for the sixth running of the Copper Corridor 50k. In the men’s race, Michael Tomchaney clocked a blistering-fast time of 3:48:08 to take the overall win and set a new course record. Brian Marshburn claimed second (4:05:27), and Pete Kostelnick (4:06:53) finished just behind in third. Lindsay Prescott broke the tape in the women’s race, winning in 4:21:37 (the second-fastest women’s course time ever) and placed sixth overall. Tori Irwin came in second (5:32:15), and Holly Hirsch (5:38:45) took third. Full results here.
Lake Ouachita Vista Trail (LOVIT)
Heading southeast, we journey to Mt. Ida, Arkansas, for the Lake Ouachita Vista Trail (LOViT) 100-mile and 100k races. Saturday’s 100-miler saw a few familiar ultrarunning names on the starting line, including Jeff Browning, who paced the way to the win in the men’s race, and Ashley Nordell, who finished second overall and took the women’s crown. Both athletes smashed the previous course records by over 90 minutes, respectively. Chris Lyle finished second to Browning in (21:06:06), and Karl Meltzer (21:21:21), another icon in the sport, took third. Second-place female honors went to Arabelle Higgins (32:11:00). Leslie Humble (32:56:) placed third.
Saturday’s 100k had 30 finishers, with Jennifer Delzeit clocking the women’s win in 14:38:48 (sixth overall), and Harry Hayde placing first for the men (10:57:43). Full results from both races here.
Mount Cheaha
Staying in the south, we climb up to Alabama’s highest point, Cheaha Mountain for the Mount Cheaha 50k. An impressive 230 runners finished the 20th running of the classic race, led by overall winner Kyle Kraeft who cruised to victory in 4:34:12. Graham Grant finished second man in 4:54:48, and Ryan Kunz (5:05:34) came in third. Ana Watters was victorious for the women in 5:43:54. Ruth Wamack snagged second (5:51:50), and Rachel Boim (6:03:34) completed the podium in third. Full results here.
Orcas Island 100
Our final stop takes us to the beautiful San Juan islands in Washington state for the Orcas Island 100. This year’s event saw 52 finishers and four women in the top five. Katie Laco finished first female and second overall, taking down the previous course record in 23:11:53. Yitka Winn finished just behind in 23:23:20, third overall and also under the previous course mark. Joanna Pisarski (24:09:13) claimed third and fourth overall. Lon Freeman earned the men’s win and finished first overall in 22:42:46. Brian Ly was second (24:47:27), and Roman Gratteri (24:53:59) took third. Full results here.
