UTMB
Nearly 2,500 runners set off from Chamonix, France, on Friday evening to conquer one of ultrarunning’s greatest tests, the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB). The 25th edition of the iconic race was marked by extreme weather, which included rain, sleet and blizzard-like conditions, which shortened the traditional 178k course by just over 2 kilometers. In the women’s race, New Zealander Ruth Croft powered through the elements to take home the female title in 22:56:23 and improve on her 2024 UTMB runner-up performance. Camille Bruyas was the second woman to cross the line in Chamonix in a time of 23:28:48. Katharina Hartmuth (24:16:39) rounded out the women’s podium in third. In the men’s contest, UK runner Tom Evans avenged his 2023 and 2024 DNFs to claim the overall win in 19:18:58. Ben Dhiman (19:51:37) finished second, and Josh Wade ran to third (20:05:06). Hi. I’m not trying to devalue Ruth Crofts’ 2025 UTMB win (I’m a fellow Kiwi who was an early adopter of competitive trail running) but I have an observation. I watched a video of Ruth on the trail mid race unedited and filmed by at least one camera operator running behind her. There is lots of footage clearly showing pacers running in front of Ruth. They have no race numbers displayed so are clearly not competitors and they stay just ahead of her. My understanding is that pacers are not allowed in any UTMB sanctioned events. Can somebody explain? Thanks.
