Welcome back to our Ultra Weekend Recap. Today we have results from UltraRunning Magazine’s own 50k held in Marin County, California, the Leadville 100, and the Squamish 50-miler in beautiful British Columbia.
At Santos Meadow in Muir Beach, California, the former USATF 50k National Championship Tamalpa Headlands 50k course was revived and returned to glory with smashing success on Saturday, August 19. Preston Cates from Flagstaff, Arizona, battled all day with San Francisco’s Paddy O’Leary, and ultimately took the title and $1,000 prize in 3 hours, 55 minutes and 47 seconds. O’Leary finished just over a minute back in 3 hours, 56 minutes and 54 seconds to take home $500. Rounding out the podium was Drew Macomber out of Angwin, California, in 4 hours, 8 minutes and 21 seconds to win $250. Jennifer Schmidt of Davis, California, led from the gun and clocked the second-fastest time the course has ever seen to take home the big check. She finished in 4 hours, 22 minutes and 27 seconds. Second place went to the JFK course record-holder, Sarah Biehl from Boulder, Colorado, in 4 hours, 40 minutes and 55 seconds, and third place went to Sylvie Abel from Los Gatos, California, in 4 hours, 43 minutes and 15 seconds. In Leadville, Colorado, Jacquie Mannhard from Boulder, Colorado, won the Leadville 100 in 21 hours, 24 minutes and 55 seconds on Saturday. Lucie Hanes out of Eagle, Colorado, came home in second place in 23 hours, 16 minutes and 51 seconds, and Madeline Wighardt of Ancaster, Ontario, took third in 23 hours, 32 minutes and 57 seconds. In the men’s race, JP Giblin, also of Boulder, won in 17 hours, 7 minutes and 25 seconds. Luke Paulson from Asheville, North Carolina, was the runner-up in 17 hours, 47 minutes and 55 seconds, and third place went to Scott Traer out of Phoenix, Arizona, in 17 hours, 54 minutes and 12 seconds. Heading north to Squamish, British Columbia, we find the results for the Squamish 50-miler on Saturday and accompanying 50k on Sunday. Emilie Mann from Kelowna, British Columbia, won the women’s 50-mile contest in 8 hours, 38 minutes and 22 seconds, in what appears to be the fourth-fastest time ever on the course. Second place was Imogene Scott of Vancouver, British Columbia, in 8 hours, 54 minutes and 33 seconds, and rounding out the women’s podium was Mercedes Vince out of Saanichton, British Columbia, in 9 hours, 9 minutes and 56 seconds. In the men’s race, Karl Augsten from Squamish, British Columbia, smashed a decade-old course record by over 10 minutes and won in 7 hours, 14 minutes and 40 seconds. Chris Balestrini of London, Ontario, also went under the old course record in 7 hours, 22 minutes and 28 seconds, and third place went to Brandon Miller from Calgary, Alberta, in 7 hours, 34 minutes and 30 seconds.
