Katie Schide
Katie Schide is ranked seventh for women in the 2021 UROY voting. In a year when few Americans were racing in Europe, Schide ran four races there (of course, it doesn’t hurt that she lives there), winning the Trail du Ventoux 46k in France and placing second at Laveredo Ultra Trail 120k in Italy. Originally from Gardiner, Maine, Schide is a PhD student in geology. She splits her time between Zurich, Switzerland, and Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, where her partner, French ultrarunner Germain Grangier, lives. – John Medinger. Photo: Germain Grangier

Hayden Hawks comes in at number seven for the men. The former Southern Utah University track All-American won four races in 2021. His win at the classic Nine Trails 35-miler in Santa Barbara was less than a minute outside Jim Walmsley’s course record. A coach and mentor, Hawks lives with his wife, Ashley, and their two children in Cedar City, Utah. – John Medinger. Photo: Paul Nelson
