In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we feature ultramarathon race results from California, Utah, Mississippi and Florida. Let’s hit the trails.
Way Too Cool 50k
We kick things off in Cool, California, for the 35th running of the Way Too Cool 50k. Known for attracting a speedy group of endurance athletes each year, Way Too Cool once again showcased some of the sport’s best athletes gunning for the win. In the women’s race, Jennifer Schmidt took the victory and finished seventh overall in 3:53:43, edging out second place Emily Clarke (3:54:43 and ninth overall). Careth Arnold (4:09:58) rounded out the podium in third. Hans Troyer broke the tape in the men’s contest in 3:19:22. Finnian Jacobson-Schulte came in second (3:26:45), and Tommy Sullivan (3:28:24) took third. An impressive 258 runners earned an official finish. Full results here.
Monument Valley 50k
Our second stop takes us to Monument Valley, Utah, for the Monument Valley 50k. This year’s race saw 83 runners cross the finish line, paced by Charles Atsye who took the overall win in 5:04:57. Chad Patacky finished less than a minute back in second (5:05:46), and Jack Watson (5:22:22) snagged third. Karen Krob earned the win in the women’s race and finished eighth overall in 5:51:58. Tiffany Swanson placed second (6:08:58), and Leah Bear (6:18:07) claimed third. Full results here.
Mississippi Trail 50
Heading down to the DeSoto National Forest in Laurel, Mississippi, we check in on the Mississippi Trail 50, Mississippi’s only 100-mile trail run (and accompanying 50-mile and 50k races). Friday’s 100-miler saw course records fall in both the men’s and women’s events, with Jackson Wolf leading the charge for the men in 17:24:48, and Bethany Madson taking the women’s win and finishing second overall in 19:08:41. The men’s course record also fell in Saturday’s 50-miler, as Josh Moore took the title in 5:50:23. Moore now holds the course record in the Mississippi 20k, 50k and 50-mile events. Greta Conlon finished first woman in the 50-miler in 9:31:28. Finally, in the 50k, results show that Lisa Gesualdo took the women’s crown and finished tenth overall (5:54:13). Ethan Lott (4:08:33) came in first for the men. Full results here.
Long Play Trail Race
The final stop takes us to Brooksville, Florida, for the 13th annual Long Play Trail Race. There were 62 runners who completed the 33.3-mile loop through the Withlacoochee State Forest, with top female honors going to Hannah Cullen, who set a new course record and placed fourth overall in 4:43:25. Kelly Harris finished second female and fifth overall (5:00:01), and Paula Lunt (5:33:46) ran to third and tenth overall. Alan Scheuermann took the overall win in 4:21:41. Trev Vanknotsenburg was the second man across the line in 4:23:25. Liam Lazere (4:39:14) claimed third. Full results here.
