After a year of devastating wildfires and epic snowfall, the highlight of the 2023 Western States Endurance Run could have easily been the significant damage to the trails and surrounding landscape. But it was just the opposite. This year’s event was one of hope and inspiration, proving that this legendary race seems to have grown that much stronger after being faced with some of the biggest hurdles in its 50-year history.

As with all the Golden Ticket races on the calendar, we talked with the contenders to get a sense of how their build-ups went and gather insight into their thoughts and feelings, and find out what they’re most looking forward to on race day.

We recently conducted a survey aimed to collect data from numerous professional runners from around the globe. This anonymous survey was filled out by nearly 200 athletes and was designed to gain insight into some key issues regarding professional athletic careers and elite competition as the sport of trail and ultrarunning continues to grow.

First, proper preparation, according to sound exercise physiology principles, helps ensure that our bodies don’t break down, and we get the maximum training benefits.
