Nearly 10 years ago, Chaz Sheya was out running on the Western States Trail with his Sacramento and Auburn friends preparing for his July 100-miler, the Tahoe Rim Trail, when a light bulb went off in his head. He recalls thinking, ‘Man, this place is really freaking cool,’ and then turned to ask one of his buddies, ‘Why are there no other races out here?’

The vast majority of ultrarunners pursue the sport for much more varied and interesting reasons than simply trying to optimize their physical performance. I believe most ultrarunners will improve and grow in their race performance and in their relationship to running via paying attention to the mindset and attitude they bring to the pursuit. What is this mindset? I think it can be boiled down to two main tenets.

We received both full-length socks and calf sleeves from four major brands and put them through their paces. The garments were worn for a variety of distances and conditions, and then also as recovery pieces over the course of a 4-6 week period. We’ve pointed out some of the construction details of each, and included our thoughts on performance and fit.
