Four major course records fell at arguably the most competitive 50k and 100k races in North America, plus results from Washington, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and more.
The Black Canyon 100k in Mayer, Arizona, played host to the second North American Western States Golden Ticket race on Saturday, and the results did not disappoint. Former UltraRunnning Magazine Podcast guest Keely Henninger from Portland, Oregon, took home the title and new course record in 8 hours, 45 minutes and 30 seconds. She was followed closely by Heather Jackson of Bend, Oregon, in second who also slipped in under the old course record in 8 hours, 47 minutes and 59 seconds. Meghan Morgan out of Boulder, Colorado, rounded out the podium and took the second Golden Ticket (Jackson is already in Western States via a sponsor spot) in 8 hours, 53 minutes and 52 seconds. Salt Lake City, Utah, resident Anthony Costales won his second career Golden Ticket en route to winning the race and establishing a new course record of 7 hours, 32 minutes and 50 seconds. Britain’s Tom Evans, already in Western States, came in second in 7 hours, 37 minutes and 40 seconds, and Germany’s Janosch Kowalczyk placed third and snagged the final Golden Ticket in 7 hours and 40 minutes. In the accompanying 60k race on Sunday, Joshua Park from Amherst, Ohio, won in 4 hours, 37 minutes and 10 seconds, with Cordis Hall of Flagstaff, Arizona, in second in 4 hours, 40 minutes and 54 seconds. Benjamin Cook, also out of Flagstaff, took third in 4 hours, 45 minutes and 33 seconds. Mimmi Kotka from Sweden won the women’s contest in the course’s second-fastest time ever in 4 hours, 55 minutes and 46 seconds, with Martha Clemmer of Chattanooga, Tennessee, as the runner-up in 5 hours, 10 minutes and 18 seconds, and Kassandra Spitler from Newport, Rhode Island, finishing in third in 5 hours, 12 minutes and 38 seconds. Auburn, California, was the place to be for the Fourmidable 50k and those looking to make Team USA who’s headed to the Trail World Championships in Austria in June. Kimber Mattox of Fort Collins, Colorado, won the women’s race and set a new course record in 4 hours, 6 minutes and 58 seconds. She was followed by Reno, Nevada, resident EmKay Sullivan in 4 hours, 10 minutes and 23 seconds, with Klaire Rhodes out of Anchorage, Alaska, rounding out the podium in 4 hours, 14 minutes and 51 seconds. In the men’s race, Jonathan Aziz from Colorado Springs, Colorado, dominated in 3 hours, 29 minutes and 31 seconds, breaking Max King’s longstanding course record. Craig Hunt of Flagstaff, Arizona, took second place in 3 hours, 40 minutes and 22 seconds, and Jacob Grant out of Salt Lake City was third in 3 hours, 45 minutes and 15 seconds. Full results here.
