Ultra Weekend Recap — September 25

Welcome to our very first Ultra Weekend Recap where we dish out results from ultrarunning events around North America. As with our What’s Up In Ultra column, please help us out and feel free to chime in with anything we missed in the comments section below. We’ll do our best to get as many events as we can each week, but know that we can’t find them all on our own. Thanks in advance for your help.

Mick Clifford flew across the pond from East Yorkshire, United Kingdom, for what appears to be his first North American ultra since 2016 and took the win at the Bear 100 in 20 hours, 14 minutes and 15 seconds. Dan Ruch of St. George, Utah, was the runner-up in 20 hours, 25 minutes and 21 seconds, and Christopher Hammes from Durango, Colorado, rounded out the podium in 20 hours, 38 minutes and 57 seconds. Allison Stratton of Lehi, Utah, took the women’s title in 23 hours, 21 minutes and 57 seconds, a 5-hour PR from her 11th place finish in 2021. Delilah Carden from Ketchum, Idaho, finished in second place in 25 hours and 56 seconds, avenging her DNF from last year, and Kallie Smith out of Missoula, Montana, rounded out the podium in 26 hours, 1 minute and 9 seconds. In Central Oregon at the Three Sisters Skyline 50k, Kerri Lyons, hailing from Bend, Oregon, took the win, was second overall and set a new course record in 4 hours, 27 minutes and 33 seconds. She was followed by Marci Witczak from Corvallis in 4 hours, 46 minutes and 12 seconds, and Devon Richardson of Seattle, Washington, was third in 4 hours, 52 minutes and 45 seconds. For the men, Michael Eaton, also out of Seattle, took the win in the fifth-fastest time ever of 4 hours and 19 minutes. Eric Colton, hailing from Bend, was runner-up in 4 hours, 31 minutes and 37 seconds, while Dylan Hirshkowitz of Seattle landed on the final podium step in 4 hours, 42 minutes and 37 seconds. The inaugural Mammoth Trail Fest 50k saw Chad Hall from San Diego, California, win what appears to be his first ultramarathon in dominating fashion; he finished the high altitude course that collected 6,500 feet of elevation gain in 3 hours, 58 minutes and 52 seconds. Garrett Corcoran from Salt Lake City, Utah, was second in 4 hours, 13 minutes and 58 seconds, and Makai Clemons, also living at sea level in San Diego, took third in 4 hours, 32 minutes and 55 seconds. On the women’s side, Klaire Rhodes from Anchorage, Alaska, also dominated, winning in 5 hours, 21 minutes and 19 seconds. Jenny Quilty of Abbotsford, British Columbia, was second in 5 hours, 41 minutes and 18 seconds, and hometown favorite Kristi Knecht took third in 5 hours, 45 minutes and 7 seconds. At the Vermont 50, Bridget Gaffney from Milton, Massachusetts, won the 50k in 6 hours, 25 minutes and 49 seconds. Lily Terry age 17 of Norwich, Vermont, finished in 28 minutes and 16 seconds, and Samantha Bottom-Tanzer of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, was third in 6 hours, 29 minutes and 36 seconds. In the men’s race, Thomas Kean of Bellingham, Washington, won in 5 hours, 45 minutes and 40 seconds, Zachary Dayno of East Thetford, Vermont, was runner-up in 5 hours, 58 minutes and 10 seconds, and Donnie Surdoval from Woodstock, Vermont, was third in 6 hours, 4 minutes and 23 seconds. In the 50-miler, Cara Baskin of East Thetford, Vermont, won in 8 hours, 16 minutes and 17 seconds, Kelly Wei from Woodbury, Connecticut, was second in 8 hours, 25 minutes and 41 seconds, and Aliza Lapierre of Richmond, Vermont, was third in 8 hours, 34 minutes and 23 seconds. Matt Guarino of Worcester, Massachusetts, was the top male in 7 hours, 26 minutes and 3 seconds, Daniel McCarthy from Burlington, Vermont, was second in 7 hours, 53 minutes and 14 seconds and Andrew Drummond of Jackson, New Hampshire, was third in 8 hours, 25 minutes and 7 seconds. At the Mountain Lakes 100, third-place finisher from the Leadville 100 just last month, Ryan Kaiser of Bend, Oregon, took the win in the fifth-fastest time ever in 16 hours, 35 minutes and 52 seconds. Casey Weinman out of Eugene, Oregon, was second in 17 hours, 13 minutes and 30 seconds and Jason Schroeder from Boring, Oregon, was third in 17 hours, 39 minutes and 20 seconds. Felice Kelly of Portland, Oregon, won for the women in the second-fastest time ever on the course in 19 hours, 7 minutes and 58 seconds. Paula McNally of Saratoga, California, ran the fourth-fastest time ever in 19 hours, 35 minutes and 23 seconds, and Eva Gifford of Rossland, British Columbia, was third in 20 hours and 58 minutes. Duluth, Minnesota is home to the Grand Traverse 27-miler and the winner of this year’s race, Alex Faber in 4 hours, 43 minutes and 22 seconds. Blake Martin from Cloquet, Minnesota, finished second in 4 hours, 50 minutes and 9 seconds, while Logan Baier, also of Duluth, took third in 4 hours, 54 minutes and 16 seconds. Sara Conrad from Minneapolis won the women’s race in 5 hours, 19 minutes and 29 seconds, Aurora Kothe of Duluth was second in 6 hours, 2 minutes and 57 seconds, and Kathleen Korschel of Mora, Minnesota, took home third in 6 hours, 46 minutes and 22 seconds.
