Auburn, California, June 23. Timothy Olson of Ashland, Oregon smashed the course record at the 39th annual Western States 100. Olson’s record time was 14:46:44. Ryan Sandes of South Africa, the 2011 Leadville Trail 100 champ, was also under Geoff Roes’ previous course record, finishing second in 15:03:56.
Ellie Greenwood of North Vancouver, BC ran a stunning 16:47:19 to destroy Ann Trason’s 18-year-old course record. Greenwood took the lead from Lizzy Hawker of Switzerland in Eldorado Canyon just after the midway point of the race and steadily pulled away for the women’s win.
An unusual late June storm created cold, rainy conditions for the first 30 miles and kept temperatures more than 20 degrees below normal throughout the day. The high temperature at Devil’s Thumb at the top of Deadwood Canyon was 53 degrees.
