Sparta, Greece, September 29. Stu Thoms of Germany and Lizzy Hawker, a British subject living in Switzerland, won the 246-km Spartathlon, which follows the route that Pheidippides took, according to legend. Thomas finished a mere 8 minutes ahead of Tetsuo Kiso of Japan, with Hawker a close third.

Glen Redpath, a Canadian national living in New York City, finished in 32:29. Oz Pearlman and Michael Arnstein, both also from New York City, finished a mere 13 seconds apart in 33:22.
