Patagonia Debuts The World’s Most Advanced Baselayer

Patagonia today announced the breakthrough Merino Air Baselayer, a first-ever fusion of sustainably sourced wool and cutting-edge technology. Merino Air looks, feels and performs like nothing else on the market – it offers outstanding warmth, more breathability and better fit than conventional merino baselayers, while still maintaining the natural odor-fighting properties of wool.

To create Merino Air, Patagonia invested years of advanced R&D to refine three unique steps driven by Patagonia’s dual commitments to technical innovation and protecting the environment:

  • We sourced merino wool directly from the grasslands of Patagonia using regenerative agricultural practices that actually reverse damage to the environment.
  • The wool for each garment is then treated using an innovative air-jet process that creates yarn of greater loft and insulation value than conventionally spun wool.
  • Using a computerized knitting machine, the lofted wool and 100% recycled-polyester yarns are knit directly into a seamless performance fit garment with minimal waste —especially compared to traditional cut-and-sew construction.

“The result is a perfect blend of technical product with best in-class performance and sustainable sourcing,” said Jenna Johnson, Senior Director, Technical Outdoor. “Merino Air’s high-loft, efficient wool construction and excellent fit will keep you warm outdoors no matter what you’re up to. It’s the most unique baselayer on the planet, made with responsibly sourced merino wool.”

Merino Air top and bottom baselayers are available for both men and women, and can be purchased exclusively in Patagonia Retail stores and at Patagonia.com.

This fall, Patagonia is also launching a completely redesigned overall baselayer collection –available via direct and wholesale – with a new line structure, exclusive fabrics and a new fit.
