Kilian Jornet, Ellie Greenwood Win Western States

Auburn, California, June 25. Kilian Jornet of Spain is the winner of the 38th annual Western States 100. Jornet bested Mike Wolfe in a tight duel over the last 22 miles, maintaining a small lead throughout, and won by four minutes.

A record 14 men broke 17 hours.

In the women’s race, Ellie Greenwood put on a late surge to pass Kami Semick at the 95 mile mark and win in 17:55:33. Greenwood’s time was the second fastest women’s time in race history. Semick and three-time winner Nikki Kimball waged a fierce sprint on the track with Semick outkicking Kimball by about 10 yards for second. Meghan Arbogast broke the women’s 50-59 age group record by more than 3 hours.

8. Amy Sproston, 37, Portland, OR, 19:36:29
9. Becky Wheeler, 36, Casper, WY, 19:47:05
10. Pam Smith, 36, Salem, OR, 20:40:57

There were 125 finishers in less than 24 hours, the last of whom, Elizabeth Carrion of Fair Lawn, New Jersey, provided the assembled throng with a huge thrill by sprinting in around the track in a furios fashion to finish in 23:59:44. A total of 310 runners finished within the 30-hour time limit.
