Fountain Hills, Arizona, November 1. Dave James of Trumbull, Connecticut smoked the field and the course in winning the seventh annual Javelina Jundred. James’ time of 14:20:54 was over an hour faster than Karl Meltzer’s course record.
Bev Anderson-Abbs of Red Bluff, California was the women’s winner. Both James and Anderson-Abbs cruised to victory and led from wire to wire. At 27 hours into the race, only 73 of the 250 starters had finished. The race has a 30-hour time limit.
The race, which is held in McDowell Mountain Park, is run on a 16-mile loop that features a 680-foot climb and descent each loop. This year’s weather was warm and breezy in the afternoon, with a high temperature of 83 degrees F. The Halloween race featured many competitors in costume.
