Phoenix, AZ, January 16. Josh Cox broke his own American record for 50 kilometers, clocking a 2:43:45 finish at an event organized by the Phoenix Marathon. Cox finished the marathon in 2:17:32, continued through the finish to a nearby track and ran the extra distance for 50K on the track.
Cox’s time was seven seconds off the acknowledged world’s best time of 2:43:38, set by South African Thompson Magawana as a split in the 36-mile Two Oceans Race in 1988. Cox’s previous American record was set in 2009 in a similar event in Phoenix at 2:47:17.
