Canadians Set Records at HURT 100

UltraRunning Magazine 08/15/2013
UltraRunning Magazine 08/15/2013

Honolulu, Hawaii, January 17. Gary Robbins and Tracy Garneau, both from British Columbia, took advantage of ideal conditions and a dry trail to set new course records at the tenth annual HURT 100 Mile Endurance Run here today. The run, which features 24,000 feet of climb on the rugged trails in the rainforest above Honolulu, usually features copious mud and frequent rain showers, but this year’s version was bone dry.

Robbins pulled away from Nathan Yanko of San Francisco during the second of the five 20-mile loops. Garneau led wire to wire, and finished third overall in successfully defending her 2009 win. Canadians dominated the women’s division, with four of the five finishers from north of the border.

Both Robbins and Garneau earned $500 for their course records. Race Director John Salmonson joked he would pay it in Canadian dollars, though at current exchange rates (about 97 cents) it wouldn’t save him much.

Despite the ideal conditions, only 47 out of 107 starters finished within the 36-hour time limit.
