New York, New York, July 30. Asprihanal Aalto from Helsinki, Finland, won the 14th Annual Self-Transcendence 3100-Mile Race in a time of 46 days, 7 hours, 37 minutes and 24 seconds. This was the tenth finish at the 3100-mile race for Aalto, and the seventh victory for him. He averaged 66.93 miles per day.
Some nine hours later, Galya Balatsky, a native of Ukraine living in Austria, finished second in 46 days + 16:18:34. Pranjal Milovnik of Slovakia finished third in 47 days + 4:19:39. The race was one of the closest in history; after 3100 miles Aalto was only about 30 miles in front Balatsky.
The race is contested on a 883-meter (0.5488 mile) loop in Queens. Of the eleven starters, six runners completed the distance within the 52-day time limit. Times were generally slower than normal this year as the runners were hampered by an extended heat wave.
