Flagstaff’s Trueheart Brown joins the URM podcast to talk about his first win at a stacked Black Canyon 100K in Arizona, nabbing a Golden Ticket to Western States. True talks to Scotty about his race-day experience (only his fourth ultra) and his approach to WS100, which will be his first 100-miler. True also shares his experience working on a hot shot crew and how it has prepared him for ultras. True is a fire management officer with the Flagstaff Ranger District in the Cononino National Forest. He lives in Flagstaff, Arizona, with his wife and two children.

Awesome interview! This was a really nice one to listen to for those of us that run “for fun” and support those we love who are the ultrarunners he referred to that are there to beat the cutoff times. My daughter did her first ultra last Fall in Colorado. We worried about her disappointment if she didn’t make the cutoffs. She had six weeks two months before the race where she was unable to run due to her hip. She trained while being a full time student and working as a barista. I cried like a baby when she crossed that finish line with an hour and a half cushion before the finish cutoff time. She was never thought of as an athletic kid so to see her fierce determination and hard work pay off was so damn cool. She also grew up in the Midwest so mountain running was brand new to her. Now she is cocky and registered for The Rut. Haha, god help us! I signed up for the shorter run and she is worried about ME! Anyway, how awesome that someone of True’s skill level recognizes how meaningful these races are to people from all walks.
