The third weekend of November featured over 29 ultramarathons on the UltraRunning Magazine race calendar. In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we feature events in Texas, Utah, North Carolina and California. Let’s get right to the action.
Our first stop takes us to Warda, Texas, for the 16th annual Wild Hare Trail Race (50-mile and 50k). In Saturday’s 50k event, Lane Rogers led the way for the men, taking the overall win in 4:47:03. Buck Baker placed second (4:52:29), and Philip Arneson (4:56:36) took third. For the women, Marjaana Rakai crossed the finish line first in 6:59:49. Jessie Winnett finished just behind in second (7:01:22), and Alissa Harms (7:12:55) secured third.
In the 50-mile race, Julie Schmal finished first female and placed fourth overall in 10:27:57. Kimberly Miller ran to second and sixth overall (10:55:01), and Avaleann White (12:26:01) snagged third. For the men, John Waggle cruised to victory in 9:14:03. Pete Kechejian claimed second (9:50:00), and Kenneth Hernandez (9:52:46) locked up third. Full results of both races here.
Heading over to Moab, Utah, we check in on the Dead Horse Ultra (50-mile and 50k races). An impressive 399 runners completed the 50k course, with Anders Hekkli running the second-fastest men’s time in the race’s 11-year history to take the win in 3:09:33. Caleb Olson finished in second with the third-fastest course time in 3:16:05. Joshua Eberly (3:27:03) rounded out the podium in third. In the women’s 50k race, Soleil Gaylord was victorious, finishing ninth overall and running the second-fastest women’s course time ever (3:53:06). Laura Cortez claimed second (4:03:59), and Skyler Dalziel (4:10:41) ran to third.
In the 50-mile event, two speedy women, Sarah Biehl and Lucie Rathbun, ran under the previous course record time and finished second and third on the overall podium. Biehl led the way with a new CR time of 7:10:05, with Rathbun crossing the finish line in 7:21:30. Natalie Nicolson finished third and eighth overall in another fast time of 7:32:42. In the men’s race, Franklin Reilly took top honors in 7:05:45. Wyatt Crowther finished second (7:23:49), and Nathaniel Gilbert (7:25:59) came in third. Full results of both races here.
Heading across the country, we travel to North Carolina’s Pisgah Forest for the second running of the Looking Glass 100k. In the women’s race, Marisa Romeo won for the second consecutive year, taking an hour off her course best time from last year and finishing seventh overall in 12:17:44. Jennifer Kurtz placed second (15:51:09), and Michelle Gray (15:53:27) took third. On the men’s side, Randy Elliott raced to victory in 11:30:23, good for a new course best. Bhushan Suresh finished just seconds behind with the second fastest course time ever (11:30:48) and Reese Wells (11:53:38) completed the podium in third. Full results here.
Our final stop takes us to California and the scenic trails of the San Francisco Bay for the 13th annual Mt. Tam Trail Run 50k. First place male and the overall win went to Ryan Becker in 3:54:56. Jacob Banta secured second (3:58:55), and Alex Solberg (4:31:58) claimed third. For the women, Lindsay Allison paced the way, winning in 4:35:47 and taking fifth overall. Ama Luthens placed second and sixth overall (4:53:56), and Lauren Williams (4:54:48) finished just behind and seventh overall. Full results here.
