Ultra Weekend Recap — November 10

This Veterans Day weekend we feature ultramarathon results from Illinois, Arizona, Oregon and Maryland. Thank you, Veterans, for your service and bravery.

We kick off the Ultra Weekend Recap in Vienna, Illinois, for the 11th running of Tunnel Hill (100-mile and 50-mile races), where Courtney Olsen set a new women’s 50-mile world record, winning in an incredible time of 5:31:56 (6:38 pace). Olsen’s time bested the previous world record by over 8 minutes and was good for fourth place overall. Melissa Tanner finished second female and ninth overall (5:58:40), and Andrea Pomaranski (6:07:05) took third. In the men’s 50-mile race, Jason Yang ran the second-fastest course time ever to win in a screaming fast 4:56:34 (5:56 pace). Ryan Root finished second (5:06:59), and Gavin Prior (5:31:13) ran to third.

Moving up to the 100-mile distance, the fast times continued with John Donovan leading the way for the overall win in 12:36:26. Phil Young finished just back in second (12:48:45), and Adam Gloyeske (14:25:26) rounded out the men’s podium in third. In the women’s event, Julie Hamulecki put forth a dominant effort to win (13:32:07), finishing third overall and the second-fastest course time ever, along with setting a Canadian National Record. Erica Aikman took second (17:01:03), and Mallory Servais 17:47:15 finished third. Full results from both races here.

Our next stop takes to Mesa, Arizona, for the Pass Mountain Trail Run (50-mile and 50k races). In the 50-miler, Matthew Bradner came out on top, winning in 8:14:27, good for the second-fastest course time. Logan Iacobelli claimed second (8:45:52), and Michael Gfeller finished third (9:02:13). For the women, Rebecca Lewandowski took down the previous course mark by 40 minutes, taking the victory in 9:46:40 and finishing fifth overall. Juliana Carvajal Castrillon earned second and ninth overall (11:10:01), and Tatiana Krikunova (11:36:30) placed third and tenth overall.

In the 50k race, Natalie Horn took the overall victory in 4:46:32 (third-fastest course time). Kyndal Sorenson finished second and sixth overall (5:32:45), and Nathalie Gosselin (5:54:30) completed the podium in third (ninth overall). For the men, Caleb Schiff earned the victory in 4:55:01. Matthew Hamilton took second (5:08:17), and Sam Skrovan (5:13:37) finished third. Full results of both events here.

Heading east, we travel to Montgomery County, Maryland, for the 15th annual Stone Mill 50-miler. This year’s event saw 194 official finishers, with Patrick Blair cruising to victory in 6:56:21. Jeremy Splitter snagged second (7:56:01), and Nate Barr (7:57:09) finished close behind in third. First-place female honors went to Niki Cochran in 8:20:47 (seventh overall). Natalie Pertz placed second (9:38:00), and Alyssa Cook (9:39:31) completed the podium in third. Full results here.

Our final stop takes us to scenic Smith Rock State Park in Terrebonne, Oregon for the Run the Rock 50k. A total of 154 runners finished Saturday’s event, with Isabelle Brauer coming out on top for the women in 4:07:34, good for third overall and just over a minute behind her 2023 course record. Jess Schueler finished second female (4:41:37), and Mel Trammell came in third (4:52:55). In the men’s race, Eric Lagerstrom broke the previous course record in a blistering fast 3:39:04. Mino Giunta claimed second (3:53:23), and Brayden Mills (4:09:13) secured third. Full results here.

Julie Hamulecki‘s 100M was also a Canadian National Record, as well as her debut at the distance. It was incredible.
