The second Santa Monica Mountains 100-mile, the 26th Kettle Moraine 100-miler and the Flagstaff Big Pine 55k highlight our Ultra Weekend Recap for June 11-12.
In Malibu, California, Megan Zdancewic from Seattle, Washington, established a new course record at the Santa Monica Mountains 100-miler in 25 hours and 44 minutes. She won with a strong lead over Brooke Rose of Riverside, California, who came through in 29 hours, 34 minutes and 23 seconds. Savannah Rose from Murray, Kentucky, was just two seconds back to take third in 29 hours, 34 minutes and 25 seconds. Jesse Haynes out of Coto De Caza, California, won for the men in 19 hours, 34 minutes and 28 seconds, taking 4 hours off the winner’s time from 2022. Max Jolliffe from Costa Mesa, California, took runner-up honors in 20 hours, 52 minutes and 57 seconds, and Louka Dlagnekov out of Escondido, California, rounded out the podium in 20 hours, 58 minutes and 6 seconds. La Grange, Wisconsin, hosted the classic Kettle Moraine 100 Endurance Runs on Saturday, June 10. Reese Slobodianuk of Delafield, Wisconsin, won the men’s contest in 15 hours, 32 minutes and 43 seconds. About an hour back, Brian Simonick of Gravel Switch, Kentucky, took second in 16 hours, 27 minutes and 57 seconds, and Jeremy Winter from Brighton, Massachusetts, came in third in 17 hours, 48 minutes and 18 seconds. Chicago’s Rachel Burke won for the women in 22 hours, 3 minutes and 5 seconds, Arianne Whittaker from Traverse City, Michigan, came in second in 23 hours, 7 minutes and 30 seconds, and Desirae Case out of Coldwater, Michigan, claimed third in 23 hours, 13 minutes and 52 seconds. Down in Flagstaff, Arizona, at the Flagstaff Extreme Big Pine Trail Runs 55k, local Abby Hall won the race outright in 4 hours, 13 minutes and 7 seconds. She was followed by Selena Langer from Parks, Arizona, in 4 hours, 24 minutes and 6 seconds, and Greta Van Calcar out of Grand Junction, Colorado, took third in 4 hours 47 minutes and 32 seconds. Austin Anderson also of Grand Junction won for the men in 4 hours, 47 minutes and 32 seconds, local runner Buck Blankenship came in second in 4 hours, 55 minutes and 58 seconds, and Willis Degrandpre from Charlo, Montana, rounded out the podium in 5 hours, 2 minutes and 7 seconds. I know it’s far afield, but Johanes Mosehla’s 9:26 at Comrades at age 81! Oldest-ever finisher beats over half the field!!
With the second fastest time in history on one of the country’s oldest 100M races, hometown-kid Reese Slobodianuk deserves his flowers!
