The UltraRunning Magazine race calendar featured over 45 great events this weekend in the US and Canada. Let’s get right to the action in this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap.
We start in Easton, Washington, for an UltraRunning Magazine Old School Ultra, the Cascade Crest 100. In the men’s race, Jesse Lang showed once again that he’s the man to beat on the CC100 trails, winning the race for a record fifth time in 19:08:05. JT Lehman finished second in 19:33:39 and Jeffrey Stern placed third (20:37:43). In the women’s event, Katherina Laan brought home the win and cracked the sub-24-hour mark in 23:34:43. Laura Westmeyer took second (25:14:35) and Sara Myre rounded out the podium in third (25:45:53). Full results here.
Our next stop is in Salida, Colorado, for the High Lonesome 100 where both the women’s and men’s events weren’t decided until the late stages of the race. On the women’s side, McKendree Hickory shattered the previous course record by over an hour and 20 minutes, taking the win in 22:19:22 and finishing sixth overall. Hickory battled it out until late in the race with second-place finisher, Laura Hansen, who also finished well under the previous course record place in 23:06:47 (seventh overall). Sarah Ostaszewski claimed third (24:56:47). In the men’s race, Christopher Hammes pulled ahead of Alex Nichols in the last 20 miles to win in 20:16:25 (second-fastest course time). Nichols held on for second in 21:06:08, and Elan Lieber took third (21:45:39). Full results here.
Heading east, we journey to Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, for the Jigger Johnson (100-mile and 50-mile races). In the 100-mile distance, where runners faced over 32,000 feet of climbing, top honors went to Keith Nadeau who set a new course mark to beat in 30:27:29. Patrick Hallahan placed second (31:14:58), and Tanner Honan finished third (32:37:59). In the women’s race, Katja Fink won in 37:47:49, Emily Walker finished second (47:23:33) and Jacqueline Fucile snagged third (50:49:47). All three women bested last year’s top course times.
In the 50-mile event, Larisa Dannis MacFadden was first female and third overall in 15:05:47 (new course best), Erica Lubera took second (16:44:20 and sixth overall), and we’re not sure if there was a sprint finish or a tie for third. Results show Kaitlyn MacGuthrie (18:06:48.7) finishing just a tenth of a second ahead of Ashley Youland (18:06:48.8). In the men’s race, Mead Binhammer took the overall win in 13:10:24 (new CR), followed by Conor Brown in second (14:15:42) and Jack Buffington in third (15:54:41). Full results here.
Finally, we head back to Colorado for the Ouray 100 Mile Endurance Run. Boasting a whopping 41,862 feet of elevation gain at an average elevation over 10,000 feet, the Ouray 100 is one of the toughest mountain races in the country. While I don’t have official finishing times yet, race tracking shows that Luke Metzger crossed the finish line in first, Soren Kodak placed second and Michael Puett claimed third. On the women’s side, Elizabeth Butler was the first back to Ouray, taking the win and finishing fourth overall. Emily Keddie took second (seventh overall) and Dena Carr came in third. Here is the link to the live tracking.
Other results from the weekend include Full Moon 50k (Perryville, AR), Speedgoat 50k (Snowbird Resort, UT) Wy’east Trailfest (Government Camp, OR), The Cherokee (Tellico Plains, TN), Lake Macbride Trail Races (Solon, IA), Many on the Genny (Castile, NY), Big Butts (Jackson, MS), and Dirty Burg (Belmont, MI). Stay tuned for more results as they continue to roll in.
Congrats to everyone who raced this weekend, and shoutout to all the amazing volunteers who were out there keeping everyone moving forward!
