The first weekend of February saw 27 ultramarathons take place across North America. In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we dive into results from Texas, North Carolina, Arizona and California.
We lead off in Huntsville, Texas, for the 33rd annual Rocky Raccoon 100 (100-mile and 100k). Jack Basler crossed the finish line first in Saturday’s 100k race, earning the overall win in 9:56:35. Mike Schmitt was second (10:46:36), and Steve Hoogland (11:00:56) rounded out the podium in third. Top female honors went to Carina Segoviano in 13:13:03. Kacey Vergara finished second (13:24:59), and Katie Pierce (13:49:02) took third.
Tatiana Rypinski claimed the women’s win in the 100-mile distance, clocking a time of 18:56:19 and placing tenth overall. Megan Jackson finished second female (19:22:21), and Lindsay Kasow (21:23:55) secured third. In the men’s event, Colin Macfarlane bested the field with a time of 15:53:49. Garrett Nelson was second (16:34:29), and William Weidman (16:44:04) came in third. Full results from both races here.
Heading southeast, we check in on the 34th annual Uwharrie Mountain Run. The 40-mile race had 70 finishers, led by Duncan Hoge who claimed the overall victory in 6:43:19. Matthew Phelan ran to second in 7:27:12, and Seth Wall (7:32:14) was third. In the women’s contest, Melissa Anglemyer was victorious in 8:25:16, good for ninth overall. Stacy McMurtrey placed second (8:30:33), and Sierra Houck (9:07:15) completed the women’s podium in third. Full results here.
Our third stop takes us to Cave Creek, Arizona, for the Elephant Mountain Trail Runs (50-miler and 50k). In the 50k race, Isaiah Ford cruised to victory and set a new event course record in 4:08:13. Avinoam Maier came in second (4:28:44), and Luke Lozano (4:53:34) took third. Leah Genth paced the way in the women’s contest, winning in 5:25:12 and finishing tenth overall. Halli Schmittenberg claimed second (6:08:42), and Kelsey Lutz (6:54:47) held on for third.
Taelor Smith smashed the women’s course record on her way to winning and placing second overall in the 50-miler. Rhiannon Wennstrom finished second female and seventh overall (11:22:08), and Nichole Willard (12:02:20) snagged third and eighth overall. On the men’s side, Damon Chavez crossed the finish line first in 7:52:30 (the second-fastest course time ever). Mathieu Lendick was second (10:46:02), and Jimmy Bruce (11:05:35) came in third. Last up, we journey to Geyserville, California, for the Lake Sonoma 100 Mile “Sufferfest.” The inaugural event saw 106 runners line up at the starting line. Unfortunately, heavy rains caused significant trail damage and race directors were forced to shorten the race to 100k. In the women’s race, Lindsey Dwyer earned the win in (12:39:26) and placed second overall. Emily Keddie finished second woman and tenth overall (13:41:18), and Kelsey McGill (14:38:57) came in third. In the men’s event, Dennis Bloc took the win in (11:56:21). Aaron Kubala was second (12:55:01), and Brock Schoene (13:04:16) finished third. Full results here.
