It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through August. Fortunately, the ultrarunning action is just heating up, with over 40 events on the UltraRunning Magazine race calendar. In this week’s Ultra Weekend Recap, we check in on results from Colorado, British Columbia, Michigan and California.

We kick things off in Leadville, Colorado, for the 41st annual Leadville Trail 100 Run, where David Roche took down an ultrarunning record that many believed might never be broken. Roche finished the iconic 100-mile race in a remarkable 15:26:34, besting Matt Carpenter’s longstanding 2005 record by just over 16 minutes. Second place male went to Adrian Macdonald in 15:56:34, the now fourth-fastest time in race history. Ryan Montgomery finished third (16:09:50). In the women’s race, Mary Denholm ran the second-fastest female time in course history winning in 18:23:48 (ninth overall) and becoming only the second woman (in addition to Ann Trason in 1994) to crack the 19-hour barrier. Zoe Rom finished in second (21:27:41) and Julie Wright (21:48:57) took third. Full results here.

Our next stop takes us north of the border to Squamish, British Columbia, for the 2024 Canadian 50-mile and 50k championships, the Squamish 50. In Saturday’s 50-mile race, Priscilla Forgie placed first female in an impressive 8:27:46, finishing seventh overall and running the third-fastest time in race history. Sara Bergen placed second (8:39:02 and ninth overall), and Kristina Randrup completed the podium in third (8:57:09 and 10th overall). Marcus Ribi finished first male and took the overall victory in 7:17:54, the second-fastest race time ever. Chris Balestrini claimed second (7:33:29) and Dany Racine placed third (7:36:57).

In Sunday’s 50k race, Alexandre Ricard took the overall win in 4:32:58 with Joshua Potvin just 8 minutes behind in second in 4:40:37.  In third place, Sam Hendry completed the men’s podium in 4:56:57. In the women’s race, Jade Belzberg came out on top in 5:16:07. Second-place female was Elisa Morin in 5:29:52, and in third was Stephanie Ryall in 5:43:27. Full results here.

Heading east, we journey to the shores of Lake Superior and Marquette, Michigan, for the Marquette Trail 50 (50-mile and 50k races). In the 50-mile race, Benjamin Drexler won in 9:04:35, the third-fastest time in course history. Ryan Hackett finished second (9:45:22), and Aaron Labelle placed third (9:53:11). In the women’s race, Lily Medina claimed the victory in 11:34:38. Taylor Corkins finished second (12:31:38), and Meghan Kehr rounded out the podium in third (12:53:13). In an extremely close 50k race, Kate Dohnal (5:32:22 and 10th overall) edged out second-place finisher Kristen Monahan (5:32:24) by only two seconds. Ericka Olin finished third (5:43:24). On the men’s side, Tyler Kobilarcsik claimed the victory in 4:21:11. Anthony Hoff placed second (4:37:41), and Mitchell Campbell came in third (4:45:54). In total, an impressive 273 runners completed this year’s 50k. Full results here.

On the opposite coast, we visit beautiful Muir Beach, California, for an UltraRunning Magazine Old School Ultra, the Tamalpa Headlands 50k. In the women’s race, Lindsay Allison brought home the win in 4:30:34 (10th overall). Sylvie Abel finished second (4:36:22) and Sarah Biehl placed third (4:45:24). In the men’s division, Cole Campbell took the overall win in a speedy 3:40:14, the second-fastest time in course history. Finnian Jacobson-Schulte finished second (3:57:53), and Andrew Rylaarsdam took third (3:59:07). Full results here.

Other results from this weekend include Bulldog 50k (Calabasas, CA), Backcountry Rise 50k (Toutle, WA), MD Heat Trail Race (Elkridge, MD), Winona Forest Backyard (Mannsville, NY).

Check out our full list of results here, and congratulations to everyone who raced this weekend.

Leadville’s CR fascinatingly follows a quirky pattern: so far I’ve found a third example besides Roche & Carpenter. Skip Hamilton also has few results listed on DUV website, other than his Leadville exploits (Hamilton won the race 4 of the first 5 runnings, and thus also held the CR at one time). Perhaps the common thread is Leadville is a very runnable “trail,” lots of well-graded dirt roads and some pavement. Nothing like many trail races.
