This weekend, the final Golden Tickets to Western States were awarded in Auburn, California, there was a backyard race in Wisconsin and a 50k in Colorado Springs, which led the charge for our Ultra Weekend Recap.
Cole Watson of Rancho Cordova, California, and Adam Merry of Boulder, Colorado, ran tactical races to clinch first and second place at the Canyons Endurance Runs 100k in 8 hours, 34 minutes and 38 seconds, and 8 hours, 50 minutes and 40 seconds, respectively. Both were awarded the final two spots to Western States in June. Less than 3 minutes behind Merry, fellow Boulder resident Justin Grunewald finished in third in 8 hours, 53 minutes and 30 seconds. International runners dominated the women’s race with Ida Nilsson of Sweden winning in 9 hours, 51 minutes and 7 seconds. The final Golden Ticket went to Canada’s Priscilla Forgie who finished in second in 10 hours and 20 seconds. Third place went to Aroa Sio out of Spain in 10 hours, 11 minutes and 43 seconds. In Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the Cheyenne Mountain Trail Race 50k, Jana Willsey from Lakewood, Colorado, won the race outright in 4 hours, 50 minutes and 54 seconds. Second overall was Maggie Shafer of Fort Collins, Colorado, in 4 hours, 57 minutes and 19 seconds. Third-place woman and seventh overall was Samantha Wood of nearby Manitou Springs in 5 hours, 30 minutes and 17 seconds. The men’s podium was swept by three local runners in their fifties: Patrick Coady was first in 5 hours, 1 minute and 47 seconds, David Musgrave was the runner-up in 5 hours, 10 minutes and 51 seconds, and Patrick McGrath came in third in 5 hours, 15 minutes and 21 seconds. Wausau, Wisconsin, played host to the Wausaultra Backyard Ultra on Saturday. Korey Konietzki from Mosinee, Wisconsin, won with 154.29 miles. Second place went to local runner Kevin Jacks with 150.12 miles and third place was awarded to Matthew Rosen out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, who notched 112.59 miles. In the women’s contest, Renae Venman from Dumont, Colorado, won with 50.04 miles, Ashley Urmanski of Edgar, Wisconsin, came in second with the same distance and local runner Amanda Trecartin was third with 25.02 miles.
