Our Ultra Weekend Recap includes results from a classic Southern California 50-miler, Earth Day 50k in the Midwest, Orcas Island 50-miler and a whole lot more.
On Saturday, Lake Huges, California, featured a triple header of ultras in hot conditions at the historic Leona Divide. The marquee 50-miler race has been happening for over 30 years, with the top two finishers in the women’s and men’s races winning Sterling Silver tickets into the venerable Angeles Crest 100 on July 29. Out front for the women and finishing in third overall, was Brianna Pagan out of Topanga, California, in a time of 9 hours, 34 minutes and 1 second. The runner-up was Heather Bell from Las Vegas, Nevada, in 10 hours, 58 minutes and 54 seconds, and third place went to Heather Liu of Oakland, California, in 11 hours, 43 minutes and 58 seconds. For the men, Makai Clemons of San Diego, California, took the title in a commanding 7 hours, 9 minutes and 53 seconds. He was followed by Rene Dorantes out of Pasadena, California, in 9 hours, 1 minute and 46 seconds, and Daniel Kilgore from Newbury Park, California, rounded out the podium in 9 hours, 38 minutes and 50 seconds. In the 100k distance at Leona Divide, Jian Springer from Woodland Hills, California, won in 12 hours, 28 minutes and 54 seconds. Veronica Alaniz of South Gate, California, came in second in 14 hours, 34 minutes and 21 seconds, and Ashley Durstine from Surprise, Arizona, was third in 14 hours, 49 minutes and 2 seconds. Clark Messman out of Los Angeles won for the men in 9 hours, 40 minutes and 13 seconds. Veteran Jesse Haynes of Coto De Caza, California, was second in 10 hours, 7 minutes and 5 seconds, and Michael Eastburn from Porter Ranch, California, was third in 10 hours, 53 minutes and 1 second. At the Earth Day 50k in Crystal Lake, Illinois, Reese Slobodianuk from Delafield, Wisconsin, set a new course record by just 8 seconds, finishing in 3 hours, 43 minutes and 38 seconds. Juan Moran from Beloit, Wisconsin, was the runner-up in 3 hours, 58 minutes and 18 seconds, and Ryan Richert out of West Dundee, Illinois, took third in 4 hours, 4 minutes and 51 seconds. In the women’s race, Brianna Bower of Montgomery, Illinois, won in 5 hours, 39 minutes and 18 seconds. Becky Patch from Rolling Meadows, Illinois, was just a handful of minutes behind in 5 hours, 45 minutes and 57 seconds. Ellen Pavlovic out of Chicago, Illinois, rounded out the podium in 6 hours, 5 minutes and 31 seconds. Full results here.
On the beautiful Orcas Island in Washington state, Marisa Pasnick of Seattle ran the second-fastest time ever on the 50-mile course in 10 hours, 16 minutes and 39 seconds for the win. Kallie Smith from Missoula, Montana, came in second in 10 hours, 45 minutes and 50 seconds, and third was Kala Maus out of Anchorage, Alaska, in 11 hours, 7 minutes and 45 seconds. Lon Freeman from Eastsound, Washington, also registered the second-fastest time the course has seen in 8 hours, 44 minutes and 50 seconds to take the title. Jon Robinson of Seattle was second in 9 hours, 18 minutes and 47 seconds, and Ryan Skotnicki out of Whitefish, Montana, came in third in 9 hours, 25 minutes and 22 seconds. Full results here.
