Janji is a Massachusetts-based company with a simple yet enormously challenging global vision: everyone should have access to clean drinking water. In order to help accomplish this goal, Janji donates 2% of all their proceeds to non-profit agencies supporting clean water projects around the globe. They also take environmental stewardship very seriously when it comes to their production models. Many of their products are made from high percentages of post-consumer material and are certified bluesign—a system that provides safer and more sustainable environments for people to work and live in. But Janji is not just a feel-good story; the apparel has the performance to back it up.
Janji AFO Middle Shorts
- Janji AFO Middle Shorts in Haze
- AFO Middle Shorts in Pop Champaka colorway
The 5” AFO Middle Short was a tested favorite from the beginning. Super lightweight and with a comfortable brief liner, these shorts worked well for everything from short neighborhood runs to longer days out on the trail. We were confident enough to wear them at a 50-mile mountain race that featured intense spring thunderstorms and came away without any chafing or discomfort. The AFO shorts wick moisture easily, dry quickly and have a “barely there” feel. Both sizing and overall fit was spot on, with no adjustments required.
With two relatively small pockets, these shorts aren’t going to carry more than a couple of gels and some smaller essentials, but they do that well. Both pockets are secure as the front is built into the liner and has an integrated light-weight key-loop, while the centered rear pocket is slightly larger, and zips closed for extra peace of mind. If you are the type who needs a little more coverage, this model is also available in a 7” inseam version. One aspect of these shorts we love is that they come in up to eight colors, including vibrant patterns with names like “Pop Champaka.” We also love that the AFO fabric is made from 88% recycled material.
Janji AFO-Vent Tee
A modification of the base AFO fabric, AFO Vent is a fully perforated fabric that allows for maximal air flow throughout the garment. The nylon-based material is also very durable, holding up to all we could throw at it, including multiple washings, with no visible wear. The micro perforations provide extensive breathability, and the fabric wicks away perspiration impressively well. The shirt also feels comfortable and slightly cool to the touch, with a smooth exterior surface that works well under a vest when needed. AFO Vent fabric is labeled as odor resistant, but we didn’t notice this to be exceptionally different than other synthetic fabrics we’ve used in our rotation.

Fit on this shirt is true to size, with Janji’s performance fit that is a little snugger through the chest, with a wider neck and hem. To complement the cut, a high spandex content keeps the shirt close to the body. The AFO-Vent tee comes in just three color options, but you can match it up with some lively AFO shorts for a technical kit that allows you to show some flair.
Quick Summary:
The Spring 2021 AFO (for “AirFlatOut”) lineup from Janji features the eponymous AFO fabric, an ultra-light and fast drying stretch woven material made from recycled polyester, which is incorporated extensively across the entire product line. The shorts and shirt combo we tested received high marks in comfort, fit, breathability, moisture transfer and overall performance. The 5” Middle short proved to be a go-to short for all conditions and distances, with lightweight construction and rapid drying, and the AFO-Vent Tee is a fitting companion with high attention to detail and strong performance features. Overall, the kit proved to be equally stylish and functional.

I’m sad to feel compelled to write this poor review-but it comes on the heels of some terrible customer service from Janji (yesterday). I’m not a hater or even a typical review writer, but with the price point of this clothing it feels important to share with the hope that Janji changes how they relate to customers. I’ll spare the details but the jacket I bought is nice, it was a higher price point than other brands but the customer service (the jacket was temporarily lost in the mail) was TERRIBLE!!! So please be aware. Nice clothing, but if there is an issue with the products-not sure how it would be handled. Bad formula in my opinion. The bottom line is this…despite the nice products, I will go back other brands with more reliable customer-based care and service.
